Not as much to see as one would expect. The ferry ride over is fun, and island is nice, but not much there, which I guess, is the point

“Simple Island with big heart!”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

What a wonderful little get away! I highly suggest the fifteen minute tour around the island to help you get your bearings and get a great explanation/history of island as you ride. You must also check out the museum to see how the islanders continue to preserve in modern times while maintaining their simple way of life.

“Back in time; a nice day trip”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

We took the Chesapeake Breeze from Reedville, which was nice. The island itself doesn't exactly seem to welcome strangers, but you still get a good sense of the place through its food, museum, and church. The two hours you get on the island is enough to walk to the beach, have lunch, and see the museum. We got the included lunch at Hilda Crockett's which I wouldn't recommend. You can get better options for a better value.

“Living History”
Reviewed June 29, 2012

Tangier Island is not for everyone. If you are looking for a luxury resort with golf courses and five star restaurants this is not the place. However, if you want to slow your pace, meet friendly folks, take long walks along deserted beaches, investigate how watermen work and live, and eat the best crabcakes and softshell crabs Tangier is your place. Accomodations are comfortable but not luxurious. Restauants range from the Chesapeake House's family style meals to snacks and ice cream at Spanky's. Travel around the island is limited to foot, bike, or golfcart. We chose to rent a golf cart ($50 for 24 hours) which made most of the island accessible. A word to the wise, there are no banks or ATM machines on Tangier and very few shops or restaurants take credit cards so bring plenty of cash.

A highlite of the trip was the Tangier Island museum. Watch the short film first and then really read your waythrough the exhibits to get a flavor of the island and its people. Very worthwhile.

“A sinking island - a cute little island to honor”
Reviewed June 25, 2012

The museum displayed many interesting artifacts, stories, historical events, tales of Pocahontas and John Smith, crabbing, local heroes, and how quickly the island is fading to the water every year. You should visit the island before it is too late!
