“New Year's Eve, 2013”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2014

Went to this restaurant with friends for New Year's Eve. We were seated upstairs which was enjoyable. Atmosphere was very nice, not rushed. Servers were very attentive and personable which made dining experience even more enjoyable. Asked us at the beginning if we had anywhere else to be; if so, they would accommodate accordingly. Offered suggestions for entrees, sides, etc. Somehow, my meal got mixed up but then I ended up with the original entrée I ordered minus the side. Thoroughly enjoyed the evening and will definitely go back.

“It's in Suffolk - - and it compares well to big-city restaurants”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2014

My wife and I always look forward to an evening at the Tavern, and we're glad to have it just minutes from our door. It is not pretentious; the menu is not what most would consider to be adventurous. The atmosphere is pleasant in a "stone and timbers" hunting-lodge sort of way, the staff is at the very least well-trained and attentive, and the entrées are flavorful and satisfying. Many of the dishes are quite substantial. When you're in a meat mood, the Tavern is a great choice. There is usually a good salmon or trout item on the menu. Have vegans in your group? This is not the place for them. The atmosphere is comfortable in a dark and intimate way. Simply a good and well-run restaurant that stands out in the community it serves.

“Over Priced and Over Rated”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014

We were looking forward to our first visit here as many of our suburban friends speak highly of their experiences at The Tavern. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. The atmosphere and service is very nice and definitely upscale as the prices reflect, but the food is average at best. The wine list although extensive is unreasonable expensive. There was nothing about our experience that would make us take the drive out here again. There are better choices of menus and venues closer to home in Olde Towne.

“"A Can't Miss Dining Experience"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 25, 2013

One our favorite dining experiences in the region is taking the drive down route 17 to Vintage Tavern. Located near Smithfield Virginia across from Cedar Point Country Club, the location is remote, but will transport you to another place. The chalet looking building is very rustic from the outside. The inside is a "game lovers" dream. There are many beautiful animals on display on the wall. As you walk in, there's a Bob Cat above you. The bar has bison, deer, antelope and wild boar majestically hanging on the wall. The inside reminds me of restaurants I've visited in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. It's a very romantic setting.
My wife and I came Christmas Eve, We began the evening with a cocktail in the bar. Although they didn't have our favorite Burbank, Woodford Reserve, we ordered a Manhattan with Bookers. Try the "Pineapple Upside Down Martini", it's a very tasty drink we've had in the past and now make at home and has become a neighborhood favorite.
After cocktails, we were seated for dinner next to the fireplace, which was excellent on a cold evening. We started with the "Southern Cesar Salad" and the down home "Fried Oysters with Pork Belly". For the entrée, I ordered the most excellent Bison Steak. The meat was grilled and served rare and melted in your mouth like a prime rib, but with more flavor. My wife ordered the Pork Chop. Of course, I had to sample a piece and the flavors were marvelous. This is probably one of the few places where a medium rare pork chop would work. But the seasonings was excellent. For dessert, we shared the bread pudding
The wine list is broad and versatile. All varietals are available, from nearly all regions of the world. The choices included many bottles under $30/bottle, although a guess of the average price is north of $40/bottle. We decided on a Carmenere (Chocolan) from Chile @ $30. It turned out to be a great value (see my review on Vivino)
The food, wine and settling was complemented by the great service.
The meal with wine came close to $200 for 2 people with tax, but not tip. Keep in mind, I ordered the most expensive entrée, the Bison at $49. Most dishes are under $30. Oh, don't forget to order some Pamiento Cheese to go. It's not what you grew up with, it's made fresh and a great souvenir of your visit to Vintage Tavern.
