“A Bygone Era”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

The Hotel Strasburg served as a hospital during the Civil War. The decor and the building harken back to a different time. We were looking for a place that had old world charm in a contemporary setting and this does. There are no amenities to speak of, no fridge or microwave so you must leave your room to eat.The dining room appears quite formal but is not and the PUB is a gathering place of locals and guests.

If you are looking for luxury and amenities, this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for the features in my title above, then you will love this place. We were upgraded to a King room though we had only paid for a standard room. It was like a step back in time to a less complicated and rushed era. Antiques were everywhere; it was like staying in a museum. Sadly we arrived too late for dinner, so we visited the restaurant (photo here) for pie, ice cream and coffee. Delightful! Our room was so charming, wallpaper, heavy old drapes, lace curtains, antique furnishings - -and comfortable - everything we needed. Continental breakfast was just that - adequate, attractively laid out for the guests.

This hotel sends you back decades in history. If you like to stay in a museum this is the right place for you. We are a famliy of five and stayed here for one night. The rooms were quite small. The breakfast was very american style. We didn't get any tea. In addition that was the only hotel on our three week USA trip where we had to pay extra charge for our son sleeping in mom's bed. Btw. Internet connection was free but also provided only historic speed - not to say is was nearly unusable. Really positive: The hotel bar, were we got some excellent wines.

Staying at the hotel Strasburg was a nice change from the chains we had been to, however The room was only average With poor views and not quite being clean.

Cleanliness is it normally a problem for me but in this case I found that someone had enjoyed a drink in one of the glasses it had not been replaced. There was also a cobweb were two in the room plus we had some dust in the corners. The hallways were fairly clean, though as was the restaurant.

The biggest issue is that the hotel isn't really near anything. it's located in a residential community which makes it quiet but boring. I usually value the former but in this case it was a little slow even for me.

A really homely hotel, full of antiques and interesting pieces of art and furniture with great history decorated in its original Victorian style. Originally built as a hospital in the very early 1900s and converted in to an inn not long after. The hotel has truly friendly and welcoming staff who could not do enough for us and our 5 year old daughter. The rooms were air conditioned, large and with a brilliantly equipped bathroom with a very powerful shower and a great hairdryer. The complimentary toilettries are also worth a mention as they were lovely. There is a pub in the hotel which serves food as well as drinks and a fine dining restaurant. There was a free popcorn machine in the pub which our daughter was immediately invited to try out - very thoughtful. In the evening we sat out on the porch to drink our nightcap and the barstaff was happy to come out to serve us.
In the morning we enjoyed the complimentary continental breakfast but you can also pay for the cooked breakfast.
The hotel is in the middle of a pretty little town with some antique shops and an amazing restaurant called Cristinas which has a garden and live music at the weekends. The value of the rooms and the hotel is exceptionel, we wish we could stay again.

This hotel may not be for everyone, but it is a nicely decorated Victorian hotel with a friendly bar just off the lobby. The rooms are not special, a weak mattress and just a basic small bathroom. But the place is lovely, friendly staff, even including the maid staff.

The town has interesting history, suburban Washington level of traffic. Much to do in town.

Room Tip: The steps are steep, no elevator, so ask for rooms on the first floor if you have difficulty with st...

Take a step back in time--the rooms and decor are quite charming but what really sets this hotel apart is the excellent, helpful, friendly staff. The dining room was inviting and the complementary continental breakfast buffet was tasty. We were there on a weekday so the menu included juice, coffee, tea or milk, Danish, bagel, English muffin or cereal. (Their website indicates there are more extensive menu selections on weekends.) The staff was very vigilant about keeping the breakfast bar clean and stocked. It's a great location that provides an excellent base camp for history and civil war buffs, outdoor adventurers, and those interested in antiques. The room rates are very reasonable which is refreshing in these tough economic times. I would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and family looking for lovely accommodations at a bargain price.
