“Another Excellent Stay at the Osceola Mill”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

This past October we stayed at the Osceola Mill once again after a nice drive on Skyline drive. We made last minute reservations and Kevin was able to accommodate our stay and dinner reservations. During our drive, there was much talk about our previous stay and dinner at the Osceola mill. Our previous dinner at the mill was nothing short of spectacular. We ordered the Valentine's Day dinner menu, and that was honestly one of the best dinners that I've ever had. We both ordered the same things--surf and turf, crab bisque soup and seafood platter. We also ordered a bottle of wine which was only about $15 (bottle of pinot noir).

In many instances, going back to the same place twice might disappoint, but we stayed at the mill twice and both the stay and dinners were great! The food was just as it was during out previous stay - outstanding. Kevin was so personable, friendly and helpful - he gave us pamphlets for Lexington and gave us ideas on what to do in the surrounding area as well. We enjoyed our discussion with Kevin and we hope to return soon.

What a beautiful spot! The old mill is fascinating. My room was beside the stream and I enjoyed being lulled to sleep by the water. Highly recommend this location. Breakfast was great. I did not eat at the restaurant, but if breakfast was an example I am sure it would be wonderful.

My wife and I just spent one night at the B&B and had a dinner at the restaurant. We had a great time and highly recommend this place as a perfect spot to get away for a weekend. It's close to scenic hiking and there is a winery a mile or so away, if that's your thing. We just chilled by the creek and in the room. The house is very old, but our room was very comfortable. The dinner and breakfast were great too. The dinner menu is unexpectedly high class for such a rural place -- lots of seafood and steaks. And the cheesecake was a perfect nightcap for me.

Great place, highly recommended!

We just left Osceola Mill this morning and what a great stay we had. First, the drive from Roanoke is just beautiful, and only about an hour away. The mill itself is old, authentic, and rustic - it's like stepping back in time. The grounds are beautiful. We stayed in the Corn Bin room, which was adorable and very cozy. Bed was comfy and warm. Last night we ate the best meal we have had in a while - Kim completely outdid herself. My husband and I each got a salad to start - his was a fruit salad, mine was a Greek style salad - both were delicious. I got the scallops which were to die for - covered in bacon, mushrooms, and some delicious sauce. My husband got the crab cakes and the lobster tail, which were both out of this world - the South African lobster tail is hands down the best I've ever had. Dessert was a fresh out of the oven cheesecake for him - melted in our mouths - and my favorite dessert, Bananas Foster, which Kevin flambéed tableside for added excitement. All in all it was delicious. We slept well. The next morning Kevin was a wonderful host and prepared us an excellent breakfast - pancakes and bacon for me and eggs for the hubby. Both were wonderful. The Dalys take such pride in the mill and really put so much of themselves into it. They really wanted us to enjoy ourselves and relax, and we did. I spoke with some of the other couples at breakfast and they all were enjoying themselves as much as we were! Thanks Kevin and Kim and we'll definitely be back!

We visited for dinner on Friday night. We were immediately seated and everything was going along fine (nice wine selection, great hot rolls, promptly waited upon) until we looked at the evening's menu. ALL the appetizers were seafood (crab, shrimp, scallops or a combination there-of). All the entrees were either seafood or beef or a combination. There was only one chicken entree and no vegetarian selection out of about a dozen selections. As my wife was not interested in seafood and doesn't eat beef, she was left with only one selection, the Chicken Marsala. This came so doused in Marsala sauce that all the vegitables ended up also floating in the sauce (I remembered that on our first visit, two years ago, my entree was also oversauced). I had the filet and lobster tail this trip. My filet and lobster were PERFECTLY cooked and delicious. The sauce was only on the filet, leaving me able to taste the excellent flavors of the vegitables. The broulee for desert was excellent as were our salads. Fine service, fair price, nice atmosphere. This was our third visit and we'll go back, but we will ask for a lighter hand on the sauce next time. We realize they are only open weekends to the public and are in a very rural area, but a more diverse appetizer and entree selection (maybe with the option to order a combination) would be appreciated.

Osceola is filled with unique history in a town loaded with Gristmills. Kevin was a wonderful host and gave us plenty of tips on restaurants and the surrounding area mountains. Breakfast in this wonderful quaint old mill was delicious. When traveling south again, we will stop again in Steeles Tavern and stay at Osceola.

first the good ; the osceola mill restaurant was terrific. i visited there with two friends and we all loved the meaql. teresa, our server (and the owner kevin's sister) was very nice. the atmosphere is very quaint, we got nice personal visits from both kevin and kim (who modestly said that she was the cook, not the chef) but her food was just wonderful the crab stuffed mushrooms were to die for (and we are all from baltimore and therefore tough crab critics). steaks were also cooked perfectly and delcious. in short, a lovely meal. grade - a

now, the cabin stayed in was a different story. i get the impression that kevin is very busy with tending to the restaurant and the b&b, and that the vacation cabin therefore gets short shrift. i think that he is a nice guy (although he did get testy with me once) but he seems overwhelmed by the b&b and restaurant. i sent three emails in the weeks leading up to our stay, one got answered, the other two were ignored. that should have tipped me off. the house itself is fine, but it needs some work. not huge work; a fairly modest investment could make it so much better. first, the grills are in need of being repaired or replaced. there was a gutter hanging off. the appliances in general are older, and could stand upgrading including the tv. there is no phone service - you can't make a call out, kevin explained that that was because it was a rental, but since there is no cell service there, there is no way for you to call out of town to family friends anyone that you arrived safely, or for anything else. (how much does unlimited long distance cost a month these days? a fraction of the cost of one night's rental, for sure). there is a hot tub there but it doesn't work. (a working one would be a great addition). the outside of the property in general is overgrown and badly in need of tending. (the lovely view of the river from the house on the web pictures is not there now). we all agreed that $10-15m in upgrades and a working phone would really make this place a gem, due to its proximity to the river and to the falls. as for now - grade c-

i can't speak at all to the b&b cause we didn't stay there; i'd avoid the vacation home until it gets some much needed tlc, but can unequivocally recommend the restaurant.
