Portions were very large, but nothing about the food was outstanding. Side dishes are served family style and were nothing to write home about - two kinds of cabbage, stringy green beans, and overcooked spaetzel. We ordered a side of dumplings and they were nice though the sauerbraten gravy they were drowned in didn't seem necessary. The Goulash was very tender (and generous) but not particularly well seasoned. They have a large selection of beers and very nice service. Okay if you love German food and want to get really filled up.

We came across this restaurant while fueling up, but we were not hungry, so we stayed for coffee and cake. Really good stuff, what a treat! We plan on going back for a full meal.

Very average food with no hint of German cooking unless you count the exceptional amount of gravy on the meat. Service staff was well meaning but not knowledgeable about the food, wine or beer. Plus it's in the middle of nowhere. Suggestion: heading north there are good restaurants 20 miles away in Staunton. Heading south there are good restaurants 40 miles south in Lexington.

The highlight of this restaurant is the homemade house salad dressing (the recipe is secret), the red and white cabbage that comes with the meals, and the vegetarian dish, that tastes very much like Jewish kishka or perhaps turkey stuffing. Hot rolls and homemade mashed potatoes are pretty good. However, the spatzle are bland and tasteless, the black forest torte dry, and the prices considerably too high - especially for lunch portions. I once requested the beef rouladen without pork, and was told it was made already - so at least some of the dishes are not cooked to order. The atmosphere is cozy and the service friendly.

Staying in Staunton, the hotel recommended that if we liked german food, we should try the Edelweiss Restaurant. What a great recommendation!! The Edelweiss is as authentic as you are going to find when it come to German cuisine in Virginia. Small but nicely decorated. A huge selection of german bottled and on tap bears, and great deserts. The the main courses were outstanidng. We plan to return to try more of the menu items. Do not pass on this restaurant if you like german food. Located only a 0.5 miles off Interstae 81
