I organized a work offsite for approximately 35 people at the Stonewall Jackson and it was fabulous. The staff was incredibly responsive and friendly. Despite the client making last minute changes on room and requipment needs, everything was taken care of extremely quickly and professionally. The renovation to the historic portion is beautiful and the hotel provides the history and charm of a bygone era along with the modern conveniences of today's workplace. Many, many thanks to the top-notch staff for making our meeting a wonderful success. We were also very pleasantly surprised with the number and quality of restaurants within walking distance. We would definitely return there for another meeting.

My boyfriend and I went to Staunton to hike and see a Shakespeare play. The Stonewall Jackson Hotel is perfectly situated in town... right next door to the Blackfriar's Theater and just a block away from the town's main street and many delicious dining establishments. We had reserved a queen-sized room in the historic wing, but upon arrival, the front desk offered to upgrade us to a king-sized room for no extra charge.

The room they gave us was next to the vending machine and the service elevator. After about two hours in the room, showering and getting ready for the theater, we realized the room was going to be ridiculously noisy with dinging elevator bells and families with little kids outside our door. I asked the front desk if we could switch to a different room (even though we'd already used the shower). Without any questions, they immediately moved us to a much quieter king room on the top floor. It was fantastic! The new room was a bit smaller than the other room, but it was just perfect for us with a very nice view out to the theater.

We slept well in our super quiet room and were impressed by the cleanliness, good service, and efficiency of this hotel. I would recommend it to anyone and would definitely stay here again.

Stonewall Jackson Hotel is very pleasant and the staff very courteous and helpful. Rooms are quaint and clean. Parking is convenient. The location in historic downtown Staunton, VA makes it very convenient to walk to and explore the shops (ice cream, gift, antiques, bicycle, etc.), several quaint local restaurants with excellent food, coffee houses, and historic sites. A playhouse/theatre is located next door. It is a walkable city. A few miles away is the Frontier Culture Museum, which is a great way to spend several hours outdoors for history buffs. Trip was capped off by 4th of July fireworks at the city park, which is within walking distance, and the Navy Band playing on the grand stage. It is like a relaxing trip back in time.

There was an event in the ball room; we were on the third floor in the newer section. Music and noise from ballroom was loud enough to disturb us. I called desk at 9:30p; desk staff said event would be over at 11p. I called back at 11:30 to complain again. This time desk staff said event would be over at midnight. They also comped us breakfast. Next morning I had a nice chat with day desk manager who understood the problem and also credited our bill some and offered to let us move to the forth floor. I think the staff did all they could; but the newer section of this hotel can be noisy. I would suggest that one check for events planned for ballroom before making a reservation.

I would recommend this hotel to a friend but remind them that they should see what events are going on before booking.

Granted, the historic hotel is pretty and well-located in the middle of Staunton and especially for visitors of the Blackfriars Playhouse (and their awesome Shakespeare Company!) an understandable choice. However, the hotel is rather expensive for a tiny town like Staunton that does not offer much and has some downsides that really broke the deal for me.
The tiny room in the historic wing - ok, I can live with that, but it is extremely noisy! Our room was well down the hall and we could hear the elevator as well as we woke up several times in the middle of the night. The walls must be paperthin and the door frames are not insulated at all, so you can hear the icemaker as if it was next to you and any conversation in the hallway sounds like someone is standing in your room.
It is still a nice and clean hotel, but really, for that price I would at least hope to get some sleep at night.
