“Nephew wedding trip”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2011

My husband and I stayed there for 3 days and took the breakfast and parking option (I highly recommend this). The only problem was the maid service, when we got back to the room, our bed was barely made. The divet cover was on the floor in front of the bed. I called the front desk and complained and got an offer for the supervisor to come and finish the room. The day after we couldn't get in our room until after 3pm (wedding at 4pm), but it was finished! Other than that an ok stay.

Room Tip: New section rooms are bigger.

My husband and I stayed over weekend gateway for our 33 yrs wedding anniversary. We purchased a breakfast and overnight parking deal for $181 plus tax for the total $199. We were giving room 417 without any outside view just facing the clay red colored brick wall. Which we felt it would be quiet. It turned out room 417; our headboard was facing the hall of ice maker and adjusting the elevator. The ice machines noise and people talking up till the 3am in a morning, we did not have restful rest. Then we go down to the lobby for a breakfast in a morning , we wanted to set somewhere quiet , a female attendant said we can sit next to another couple who was talking lots , we asked how about by the window where was table available but was told the table was for someone else . That time my husband heard a male waiter said just sit where we tell you sit! We ignored his unprofessional comment and we sit at the corner of restauntrant. A female waitress a name Dawn was only person we felt a pleasant. At the front desk, we were told by Sr citizen lady, our Package was already discounted deal which we felt it was a valued special pkg the hotel offered. Instead we were treated UN valued, Also felt discrimination from this older lady. We are also senior citizen but would never expected, a room without a view but with lots of noise so that you will not get able to rest! We will never go there again, especially for our anniversary gateway weekend

Room Tip: Avoid Room X17 , X18 , x19 where it is close to the Ice maker and Elevator

For less than US$200.00 we were able to have a great room in a historical American hotel. Breakfast is a fantastic (paid) experience, that should not be missed. Employees are extremely friendly. Just beware not to be invaded by conventions, that damage the great lobby picture, spreading out their leaflets or even worse food and beverage. A pity. But nothing can be done. just complain to reception. Business is business, indeed.

The Stonewall Jackson is a beautiful renovated early-20th-century hotel in a gorgeous small town in VA. We had our wedding reception here and it was beautiful and very well-run-- I didn't have to worry about anything and the food was to die for. We return here every year for our anniversary. They are located right next to the American Shakespeare Center and close to all of the small shops and great restaurants on Staunton's main drag, including my favorite restaurant, Zynodoa. The rooms are spacious and well-appointed, parking is easy, and the beds are comfortable. I have found that the service is excellent and their breakfast buffet, while a little pricey if purchased outside of a package, is stellar, especially the omelets and waffles! The price for rooms is reasonable and they even allow dogs for a small fee! Highly recommended.

We really enjoyed the Stonewall Jackson Hotel. It's very pretty, the room was large and clean, and the service was fantastic - everyone was friendly and said hello, and they sent us champagne because we'd mentioned it was our anniversary! That was such a nice gesture, we really appreciated it. The hotel was also in a great location - we could walk to everything in downtown Staunton from there, and the Blackfriar's playhouse, where we saw a play, was right next door. Very convenient.

The only downsides to our stay were that we had to pay $4 for overnight parking where as far as I could tell, regular patrons for the parking garage only have to pay $1 and the beds were really uncomfortable and the linens were strange. Instead of a fitted mattress pad and fitted sheet, they used some sort of strange wool pad and a flat sheet that didn't completely tuck in as the bottom sheet. This meant that the flat sheet came untucked in the middle of the night and the mattress pad bunched up, making things very uncomfortable. Also, the mattresses were soft and with craters, I think they probably needed to be replaced.

We really enjoyed our stay otherwise and would stay at the Stonewall Jackson again if we return to Staunton.

Room Tip: Pick a double queen room in the new wing.

Stayed here for three midweek nights in September. The hotel is well located in the centre of Staunton. There is parking under the hotel (actually at the end of Greenville St). We didn't eat at the hotel as the facilities were a little bit overwhelmed by a couple of conventions. However, there are restaurants and coffee shops within easy walking distance. The hotel boasts a small fitness centre, swimming pool and a guest laundry ($2 each for the washer and dryer). Parking was $4 per day ( during your stay you can use your room card to get in and out)

The two best things about the S-J is that it is 100% smoke-free and it is located next door to the American Shakespeare Center. Those two points count for a lot for us. The two worst things about it is the beds and pillows are lumpy and the sheets are hard and scratchy. Otherwise it is clean and the staff is perfectly friendly without being insincere. When the prices are closer to $85 a night, I figure we get what we pay for; but when their rates go into triple digits, a local B&B makes for a better value with softer sheets, comfier beds and breakfast the next morning.

Twice in 6 years we have tried the Sunday morning breakfast / brunch at the S-J, but we have always been disappointed by the fruit offered. It really does taste like it came straight out of a can. But, the omelet station is a plus as are the hot biscuits. However, for as much as is charged for breakfast, we can go eat at Mockingbird or Stanton Grocery for significantly better quality and taste. (Or The Beverly - but it is closed on Sundays!)

The tiny basement fitness room has the basic staples (minus and free weights) and the itty bitty pool / spa is in the basement and has a strong chlorine smell. As for the hotel, it is nice enough overall.

Room Tip: We prefer the new wing with two queen beds as opposed to the old wing which has a king sized bed in...
