.I have eaten at some very well known resorts and have seldom had food as delicious and artfully prepared as this Even the simplest of fare has an elegant twist. From the guacamole to the divine soups the food is exceptional and unlike anything else to be had in the Staunton/Charlottesville area The young owner and her creative chef combine their knowledge of healthfully prepared local offerings with a wine list rivaled only by a few upscale D C eateries to present exquisite meals in a comfortable inviting atmosphere. The surprise is that the food is so good and so good for you and priced very reasonably for the quality Ava Restaurant will be on my itinerary whenever I am near Staunton and well worth the trip when I am not.

My wife and I had a delicious meal consisting of filet mignon, carrots, spinach and seared catfish, braised vegetables and cocoanut custard pie. The atmosphere was good with soft jazz and an eclectic decor. Service was attentive with a warm and pleasant staff. The wine selection is huge. We will definitely return and bring our friends!! H.P.

Quite an interesting place! Used to be all vegan but now has other choices. Very good food. Wine list is extensive. The service is vey good but it is not a quick lunch which is fine. Menu is eclectic. They have poetry readings, music, etc at night. It is new so definitely hope it is successful.

AVA (formerly The Darjeeling Cafe) has a very comfortable and intriguing atmosphere, with a mixture of bar stools, two and four tops, and couches. The service is prompt and professional.
Based on recent reports we had hoped for more from the food. The house salads were unremarkable. Our appetizer of mushroom brushetta was quite good. One entree of shrimp and grits was certainly acceptable but not outstanding. The other entree of fried chicken was well cooked and succulent, but there was an after taste that may have come from the breading or from cooking oil past its prime.
The dessert of fried apple pie a la mode was a very generous protion and was certainly good if not great.
The credit card payment relies on a smartphone ap presented by the owner which forces a choice of tip between 18, 20, and 22 percent. Although the service was attentive and professional and thus worth a good tip, I do prefer the flexibility to choose my own.
I think that currently there are better choices at the same price point with a block or two.
What AVA does have, however, is a great atmosphere, a wide choice of wines and beers, and probably the most extensive vegetarian menu in Staunton. (We did not try any of these dishes, however.)
