We have visited some other Presidential libraries and decided to visit the Woodrow Wilson house, while staying in Charlottesville. It was a very easy drive to Staunton (about 40mins). It was early January, so it was not busy and we had a private tour of the house. The guide was very knowledgeable and showed us the whole house including upstairs, which we gather was not normally part of the tour. We then took a walk around the museum next door. It is very low-key when you compare to some of the other Presidential Libraries (Roosevelt, Reagan etc) but we really enjoyed our visit and found it to be very interesting.

I didn't know much about Woodrow Wilson before I decided to visit his birthplace in Staunton, Virginia. I got there just before I tour was starting and thankfully they were not too busy (it was a dreary, overcast day). The house was well maintained and the guide was very informative. Lots of the artifacts are common to historic houses of the time. But it gave you a great background into a man that would become the President. Also the effort the women of the city went to preserve his childhood home shows the dedication the city had to the great man. So go and see where Tommy Wilson started his life....

Since the home is really only his birthplace, having left there when he was two years old, don't expect a comprehensive library.
Two bus tours arrived as we did which I now realize, shortened our home tour, never getting to the upstair bedrooms unfortunately.
Lovely renovation to see.

In Staunton, you can have the benefit of a charming town with a presidential birthplace, Woodrow Wilson Museum exhibitions --- including his cool Pierce Arrow automobile --- and recently added research library. the facility gets better and better. The docents offer activities for children and the garden, funded by the Garden Club of Virginia, is a beautiful gem.
