Owner description: The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

“Blackfriar's Playhouse”
Reviewed December 15, 2010

Four of us saw MacBeth performance in December. Could not have been more pleased and entertained. Every aspect of the afternoon presentation was conducted with the audience in mind. The performance was superb as was the beer, the songs and, yes, the theater itself. Some of the most energetic and powerful theater you will ever see. I'll return. Highly recommended.

“A Great Evening...”
Reviewed December 4, 2010

We thoroughly enjoyed the production of the Taming of the Shrew . The actors are amazing and quite hilarious. We purchased several bench seat tickets (on stage) so that the our teenagers could get involved. At several points during the play they were asked to interact with the actors on stage...hilarious! I would highly recommend for all ages. Our group consisted of ages 16 through 87 and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their Shakespeare experience.

“Worth a visit”
Reviewed October 20, 2010

I didn't have time to see one of there Shakespearian production, but they were gracious enough to offer a tour of the place for $5. It's a beautiful building. The tour takes you through the history of Blackfriar's Playhouse in London. Afterward, you can see were the actors dress, costumes are made and the stage. Definitely worth the visit.

“Do not miss this”
Reviewed September 19, 2010

The Blackfriars Playhouse is a gem and a real bargain. The actors perform music before the show (be sure to get there 1/2 hour before the starting time) and at intermission. There are no bad seats (well, there are a few seats with blocked views, but it looks like they don't sell those), so it's an intimate theater experience. We were impressed by the caliber of the cast, and the price of seats ($22.50 each) was a bargain (we're from the DC metro area). A great way to spend an evening after hiking in the mountains.

“Excellent expierience”

Somewhere in the middle of nowhere ... you find this truly inspiring, glowing with energy theater company. "Othello" was one of the best small theater productions I have seen in a long time. The playhouse's design and the company's spirit makes this an unforgettable experience! A 'must go' when you are in the area!
