Owner description: The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

We saw a performance of Macbeth here during our trip. It was very good. Lady Macbeth's performance gave me goosebumps!

The theater itself is a recreation of the BlackFriar's playhouse in London. They do their best to produce the plays as they would be in Shakespeare's time. This means lights on (simulating a 2PM sun), audience members on stage, and even some audience participation when called for.

We took the tour earlier in the day and learned a lot about the history of the theater and the company. The backstage areas are pretty standard for a theater, but still interesting to see. If you're a regular theater goer, I'd probably pass on the tour.

The world's only recreation of Shakespeare's Blackfriars playhouse is situated in Staunton, VA, and is host to theater of international ranking. The professionalism and skill of the talented actors is on par with RSC and the Globe in the UK - for live "in your face" Shakespeare, this venue is unbeatable!

Staunton is a unique town that is quite literally transforming itself into a vibrant home for arts and quality entertainment... the Blackfriars Theater is a cornerstone for this transformation. Within the beautiful structure lie some of the most talented actors, costumers, and performers in the region--including the so-called hotspot for theater up the road in DC. We have seen three plays over the past three years, this time, it was Macbeth. We enjoyed an engrossing performance--Lady Macbeth stole the show among some very talented performers by the way!--and were once again taken back in time and removed from the hustle and bustle of the world back home for a few hours. Love the ASC! Worth the trip... no matter how far you need to travel.

This Theatre Company has really ripened over the years, and they are surprisingly good, and consistent in their productions. They will not disappoint you, and it is always fun to go there. They have a style all their own, and their actors are uniformly talented and experienced. Staunton is a wonderful little town to visit, for dinner and theatre. Hie thee hence !!!

It's been about a year since our last trip.here, and each ti;me we return we wonder why we waited so long. Well, it's true it's a 4 hour trip and an overnight stay...but even so, the theqter experience is worth every bit of it.
This time we saw Cyrano de Bergerac...sentimental but one of my all time favorites. Far from saying it did not disappoint, I have to gush a bit and say it was one of the best theater experiences I have ever had. At the end, not a dry eye amongst the family as the sad ending played out and once again, we recognized Roxanne for the great twit that she is..
..
Second show, Macbeth ...full of fear and trembling, great imaginative staging and a gender bending approach to casting that kept the production interesting and fresh. We all loved it.

This theater is a gem set in the Shenandoah Valley; and you deserve to treat yourself to a day or two to experience it.
