Owner description: The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

If you've never been to the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, you need to pick a play and treat yourself to a wonderful experience. I understand that Shakespeare is not for everyone, but they also put on a variety of other shows. Allison Glenzer's one woman performance over the Christmas holidays in The 12 Dates of Christmas was worth the price thrice over. She was hilarious and boldly entertaining. I've been to probably a dozen plays over the years and never been disappointed.

Went here on 12/11/13 to watch a Christmas carol and it was so much fun! the actors are great, they interact with audience and there was an intermission where we could buy snacks. only problem was we were seated on the balcony, above the right part of the stage and it was hard to see many things. missed a lot of funny parts because of this and had to kneel down or stand to see entire play. would go back, but wouldn't sit in that area.

Good place for accessible Shakespeare. It may not be the same calibre as larger urban venues, it is enjoyable and a fun evening.

Don't know your Shakespeare? If you are luke-warm on Elizabethan English, then choose a comedy - something this troupe are really good at!

The Blackfriars is a jewel, a treasure in the Shenandoah Valley. The productions of Shakespeare and other early drama are always lively, entertaining, and interesting. I've never known anyone who was not enchanted.
