Owner description: The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

When we are in Staunton, we stay in a hotel right next to the American Shakespeare Center, and one night we decided to take in their performance of "Romeo and Juliet." Now, R&J is not the most humorous thing Shakespeare wrote, but ASC brought new life to it with a light touch, a tiny bit of farce, and a highly talented cast. No, this is not your grandmother's Shakespeare; it's so much better.

We loved seeing Romeo and Juliet this past summer. Staunton is a charming town to visit and this really was a highlight of our trip. The company gave us a wonderful perfomance and I loved all the interaction with the audience before and during the play. The theater itself is very unique and beautiful and it was a wonderful experience for our whole family. Our seats were in the balcony area but really any seats are great in this theater. Maybe next time we'll try the ones on the stage!

Great cast, well acted in an intimate and beautiful theatre space. I'm not thrilled with our choice of play but can't fault the company, only Wil himself. This one should have been left out of the folio. Troilus and Cressida doesn't know what to make of itself. Not a historical play, not a comedy and not a tragedy. It really falls between the cracks. Still, a very enjoyable experience.

Yes, if you have never visited the town of Staunton, you need to put it on your list. Theater, dining and lodging all together in the Blue Ridge Mountains...you can't go wrong. The theater experience was perfect. Great seating, wonderful production and beautiful theater.

Saw three plays, All's Well, Forbidden Planet and She Stoops to Conquer--all excellently acted and imaginatively produced. Love the music before and at intermission as well as the raffles and general actor-audience interplay.
