Owner description: The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

The actors performed before the show and during intermission, adding to the experience. Seats in the back are less comfortable that the closer seats, though.

We just happened to find out about this theater when we were staying overnight in Staunton. Much to my delight, we got tickets for that night's performance. It was awesome! The theater group we saw was actually a visiting troupe from London. Each of them were amazing and we sat right in the front on the side (Hint: That is where the comfy chairs are!)

This is simply a great experience - even for people who think they do not like Shakespeare, or know nothing about him. The place itself is a great re-creation of the orginial theatre, and the acting is wonderful. This is the 3rd time we went (saw "the two gentlemen of Verona"), and every time, we were simply enchanted!

Great fun with entertainment 30 min before the show starts so get there early. Balcony seats are general admission but great view. Middle row has no back, so another reason to get there early so you can sit on front or back row and get some back support. Actors provide the introductions and music as well as the play so you feel very close to them and is a very relaxed atmosphere.

What a surprise. We saw The Two Gentlemen of Verona and loved it. The actors were amazing (and I never use that word). We will come back!
