Owner description: The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

“Very High Quality Preformance”
Reviewed June 8, 2012 via mobile

The interior is very authentic, with no flashy stage lighting or computerized sound cues. The actors were incredibly good. I am a teenager and I have seen four different versions of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, but the one I saw here a few years ago was by far the best. I have also seen at least five performances of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, and the one at the Blackfriar Playhouse was well cast, unique, and wonderfully executed.

“Incredible performances”
Reviewed June 5, 2012

This is really a first rate troupe of actors. We enjoy every show we attend. Beautiful theater. The first play we ever saw here was "King Lear" several years ago. Initially, we were taken aback by the modern attire (business suits) but once we got used to that we absolutely loved that production's spin on the story. (Lear was the CEO of a company and his assistant his fool!) Absolutely superb performance. Still our favorite. Since then we have seen a number of different groups of actors perform in different seasons. All of them are so talented. They are busy even during the intermission when they entertain the audience with song. Our favorite performance this season was "A Midsummer Night's Dream" -- fast paced, well choreographed. We live 2.5 hours away, but it's so worth the drive.

“Blackfriar Theater was Excellent”
Reviewed June 4, 2012

While the play we saw was a bloody tragedy, the actors were fun, entertaining and a joy to watch. Before the show, they walk around and talk to the audience members, during intermission they sing and perform, and afterward, they again visit with the audience as if visiting old friends. I enjoyed every minute and cannot wait to go back.

“Slightly Disappointed!”
Reviewed May 29, 2012

We did not expect the players to be dressed in "colored sneekers and mod outfits" but the pre-show music was great. The seats were not that great for the time spent in them. The interior was very authentic. If you go with these things in mind you will enjoy your evening.
