Owner description: The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

“Great performance, beautiful theater!”
Reviewed February 20, 2012

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed "Philaster, Love Lies Bleeding" at Blackfriars (American Shakespeare Center) this weekend. The actors were absolutely wonderful, top notch; the production was fresh, engaging, and great entertainment; and the theater is beautiful. Every aspect of our visit to the Blackfriars was fun: the pre-show introduction; the play,of course; and the music during intermission. The staff was friendly and courteous. We're looking forward to returning soon!

“Always wonderful”

I have been going to plays at ASC since it opened its doors and I have to say it just keeps getting better. Resident troupe members are often seen downtown or at the local gym and they are great additions to the community. ASC gives every visitor a unique theatrical experience and you always leave feeling like you've seen something really special. If you're visiting Staunton, definitely come see a play. Don't worry if you don't think you can understand Shakespeare, they make it easy to get and there are many options besides Shakespeare if it's just not your thing. Beautiful theater, lots of fun, DON'T MISS IT!

“First class theater in a small community.”

We feel fortunate to live close enough to attend Shakespeare and other performances in a true Shakespearean theater. Cast is first rate. Always fun numbers between acts as well.

“All's well that ends well!"--a lively time at the theatre.”
Reviewed January 31, 2012

A trip to Staunton is incomplete without a night at Blackfriars. I have seen Shakespeare put on by some of the best in the US and the UK. Blackfriars ranks among them. The production values are true to the plays and as a result the audience is brought into the action so much more than the sometimes overproduced attempts I have seen. The setting itself is intimate and worth experiencing. In my opinon the best seats are amongst the groundlings. The view from above is nice...but there is nothing like a seat at the stage...or even better on the stage! Well worth the price of admission.
