The Clock Tower Restaruant in downtown Staunton has a surprisingly good meal at a reasonable price. Looks like it might be a bar food establishment, but it far transcends that in recent years.
Clock Tower specialize in Italian dishes, and my wife has twice had and twice loved their portabella mushroom ravioli. They by no means slight other kinds of food, and I had a wonderful shrimp and andouille sausage over cheese grits entree on special on our last visit. Entrees come with a choice of soup or salad for starters; we had salads, which were fresh and tasty.
They were busy on a Friday night, but the service was quick and efficient and the owner stopped by twice to make sure everything was satisfactory.
I think the presence of many good and even fine restaurants in Staunton is creating a feedback effect -- a place is not going to thrive unless it can offer a good meal, and increasingly even the more modest places are doing that.
There is table seating for everything from couples to small groups and a bar with seating. (Tip: Don't sit near a group table as they are often noisy because they are having so much fun.)
There is also a separate bar with entertainment (" Downtown27 at The Clock Tower") attached. The main restaurant is closed Sunday, the back bar open Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.
