Nice open gravel parking lot. Easy trails, nice bridges. Some great views of the wetlands area. There are some good rock formations for scrambling in the abandoned quarry area. A few places to geocache.

It is a small area to hike. Nice vistas of marshes and interesting history to the area. Pretty area to walk through if you don't want to spend a whole lot of time hiking. Easy hiking also.

Government island is an great place to go for a walk or run in a natural setting. It is like stepping out of town and back in time looking at the limestone walls that gave us the stone for the White House. Friendly people walk their dogs or traverse with their children. Though hurricane Sandy did some damage to the trees, it is still gorgeous; it is a wonderful place to reflect and look at Aquia creek. Worth going in every season.

If you go to the website this is the description...so a bit of history about this park.

Located off Jefferson Davis Highway in Stafford, this historic park is the quarry site that provided Aquia sandstone for the construction of the White House and the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. After the mid-1800s, the site was left virtually undisturbed for more than 150 years. This natural park preserve and archaeological site offers a 1.5-mile trail. Creeks, wetlands, and marsh areas provide a variety of habitats for native and migratory birds and other wildlife. The elevated boardwalk through the wetlands and woods to the island provide a continuous, accessible viewing area.

What is not to like? Before they built the bridge and the walkway, the only time you can get to the quarry is through Aquia Harbour on foot or by horse but every historical site should be shared with everybody. I come here almost every week since they are just a few blocks from our house, you can bird watch, bike, run, walk your dogs, take photos, take a hike, this is just a small area so its highly recommended for any ages

Have been a few times. Have also encountered mix of people. Little ones on trikes, wheelchairs, joggers. The two board walks in the beginning will accommodate wheelchairs then it gets a little more rocky! Each visit brings me farther along the trail. Beautiful water views and info markers along the way. Plenty of nature to check out. Info is that this area provided the stone for the construction of the White House and the US Capitol Building. Have not seen NO Feeding signs but bread for the wildlife(fish) seems like fun for the kids and Adults. Ok, I saw other visitors feeding this off from the Boardwalk looked like fun !
