As the parents of a three and one year old, my husband and I do not often get time alone together. When we decided to head to the area for a three day "weekend," I was convinced it would be so built up it couldn't begin to reach our expectations. I was right. It surpassed those expectations. Exponentially. From the attentive service of our hosts, to the amazing, it deserves repeating, amazing breakfast prepared with many foods grown and raised on the farm, it was more than worth the price tag. The setting, too could not disappoint, affording spectacular views from the second floor rooms. Serene and remote, yet remarkably close to many great wineries- too many to list, and great hikes- 15 minutes from Old Rag Mountain, we can't wait to plan our return trip.

We hated to leave and are already planning another visit. The Inn is a thoughtfully restored pre-Civil War farmhouse perched half-way up a mountain with a breathtaking view of the farm, the valley beyond and the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We enjoyed a glass of wine on the front porch, visiting with the horses, and exploring the magnificent barn. Every room is beautiful and unique -- there are no bad choices. Views from every window. Breakfast includes homemade sausage and organic eggs from the farm and coffee from individual French press pots. As my husband said after a tour of the farm, "They did it right in every possible sense."

Room Tip: The Music Room is the smallest and least expensive, but lovely and perfect for one guest or a couple...

For 14 of our family this Inn was special in every way. There are touring farm activities including a llama and a donkey; and the bocce court was extremely popular. In spite of the summer low water the 6 year old even caught a few small bass in the Thornton River. Both the renovated accomodations and the breakfast exceded expectations; and the front porch view, including Old Rag( 9 miles away), is exceptional. This Inn, which has been in the Miller family since 1827, was also able to provide a wonderful preordered Birthday dinner in their historic basement.

A wonderful place to relax in an idyllic setting in the Shenandoah valley. Excellent location for enjoying the beauty of the area, hiking and discovering good local restaurants. We loved the breakfasts at the inn, the accommodating attitude of the innkeepers and the wonderful farm tour presented by the owner!

Cliff Miller should be commended for his land and water stewardship alone. Set in hilly, verdant Rappahannock County, his Inn at Mt. Vernon Farm offers serenity and pastoral inspiration for careworn urbanites and organic farm supporters alike. We drove down from New York City on the way to a wedding, stopping at the Farm and staying for one night in the Cabin. We were greeted by friendly, unobtrusive staff and were able to quickly shake off the long, stressy drive by settling ourselves on our front porch, drinking complimentary wine and watching the sunset and blinking fireflies. (Re. earlier review, no need for cheese and crackers or clunky deck furniture, in my opinion.)

After a lovely dinner at the Blue Rock Inn (thank you to our fabulous server who comped us a round of drinks, just to be nice), we settled into the most gorgeous, crisp white Sferra sheets and tucked into bed with a Charles Dickens book I'd found on the bookshelves downstairs. The cabin was luxuriant compared to my tiny apartment in New York City, and housed us with simple good taste and no fuss.

The next morning's breakfast, in the cozy, spotless dining room of the main house, was homestyle and delicious (see pictures). Afterwards, Cliff offered to take us on a tour of the farm, during which we learned all about the nutrient exchange of grass and cow manure, as well as how Cliff is trying to raise holistically grown, grass-fed beef and fabulous, adorable pigs for bacon, as well as trying to build topsoil and maintain water quality. There was also about to be a wedding held in the cathedral-ceilinged barn, and we watched the space come together and transform into something Martha Stewart would go bonkers for.

Truly, we didn't want to leave the Inn, and as we drove reluctantly away, I schemed how to get back there sometime. I can't recommend it enough, though part of me wants to keep it a secret, fearing that it would be spoiled by any overly-commercial glare and that I'll never be able to book the cabin again. The Farm is a gem, the Inn is pristine, subtle and perfect. 'Nuf said.

Turning 50 was easy because I did it with class at The Inn at Mount Vernon Farm. As a present from my husband, I booked the entire place so I could share this charming home and breathtaking views with my family and friends. We all met on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in April under the outdoor pergola to enjoy drinks and a game or two of bocce ball. That evening, Chef Sylvie Rowland prepared a mouth watering meal that included locally grown products... a mesclun salad with pea shoots, arugula and edible flowers, beef bourguignon, lemon rosemary roast chicken and home made ginger and raspberry ice cream. Yum! Cliff Miller attended to all of our needs and truly made us feel like family. He was a gracious host and paid attention to the little things. As a matter of fact, I believe that fried apples appeared on my breakfast plate on Sunday morning because of him! I highly recommend this B&B and can't wait to return.

We stayed in the cabin and had a wonderful and relaxing time. The setting is beautiful and the cabin itself was nicely decorated with good taste and a great vibe. The staff were very nice and accommodating and we were given a tour of the farm itself by the owner which was fascinating and actually made our day. The breakfast was delicious and there were many nice touches such as the free wine (which was very drinkable), etc... I would definitely recommend this bed and breakfast.

Room Tip: If you are looking for privacy and solitude the cabin is a great option but all the rooms that we sa...
