We were driving from Madison, VA to Luray, VA along a back country road and really enjoying the scenery. We came to a crossroads called Sperryville and there was the restaurant. The food was great, the service was good and reasonably priced. We each had the quiche with red pepper coulis and a side salad. Everything was fresh. A few historic homes are in the neighborhood along with a 1905 abbey which is on the Historic Register.

My husband and I have been there several times while visiting nearby wineries. We have learned that everything except their seafood is excellent. I recall a steak salad, the steak which was done to perfection. Their seafood leaves much to be desired. I guess it is just too far from the ocean. After a few tries, we gave up on their seafood when we had to immediately send back a huge plate of mussels that had a terribly unbearable stench--something like cat urine. So far, that was the only thing I've ever sent back at a restaurant. It amazes me to this day that they actually served it. Do they not know that seafood is not supposed to smell that way? Also, the service wasn't that great, which is normal for just about all the restaurants in that area. We have always had a long wait, despite having reservations each time. I think they just take reservations to humor people.

In sum, I recommend this restaurant with the warning to stay away from the seafood, keeping in mind that everything else I've had there has been good, and because there really aren't that many restaurants in the area.

We visited the restaurant three times this past weekend. The food is fresh, exceptionally well prepared and presented with style. The NY Strip seak is double thick and one of the best steaks I've ever had. It comes with an excellent shitake sauce. Both the shrimp appetizer and shrimp entree are exceptional. The appetizer comes with grits and red eye gravy and the shrimp entree has some real zip to it. All of the accompaniments, bread, vegetables and other appetizers were top notch. The wine list is excellent and reasoably priced. The restaurant carries many specialty beers as well. The owners of the restaurant are very customer oriented and checked with us about our experience. All in all a great place in a beautiful setting. For the high quality of food, the restaurant is a tremendous value.

This restaurant came recommended by our hosts at Sharp Rock B&B, and it lived up to their recommendations. We had to wait a bit even though we had a reservation, since the dining room was small, but it was easily worth it. The steak was done to perfection, the risotto was excellent, and the bread pudding was just unreasonably delicious. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the other customers were great - the whole dining room joined in for a rendition of Happy Birthday for one of the customers. The open kitchen is a great touch - don't be fooled by the small-town appearance of the outside & surroundings, this is really good stuff.

Who would have thought that, in the middle of nowhere, we would find a restaurant this good? The atmosphere was casual but clean and comfortable. The service was extremely friendly, the food was great, and the wine list was diverse and affordable. They also have a fabulous beer list (dozens of microbrews and unusual imports). We will difinitely be back.
