Normally eat here inside at night but this time took a ride with another couple to visit for lunch. Wanted to sit outside on the roof deck but was told it would be a 30 minute wait. This was at 2. Decided to stay and only waited about 15 minutes. Food and service were both enjoyable.

What a lunch! Totally unexpected and delightful!

We sat outside, on the deck. Our waitress was great and the food was even better. The people running this restaurant really care, and it shows. The décor is nice, understated, casual; even on the deck. The restaurant is clean, friendly, and DELICIOUS.

We were only looking for a nosh to hold us over until dinner, so I ordered the turkey melt, expecting the usual sad, boring sandwich. What arrived, was a scrumptious sandwich on toasted sourdough with thick, crunchy bacon, juicy apples, yummy cheese, tasty turkey, and amazing hot peach chutney. It was SO GOOD. I should have taken a picture of it, because their menu is so understated, you would never dream of it being so great.

We ordered a side of tomatoes and they brought us thick slices of BEAUTIFUL heirloom Cherokee purple tomatoes. Just fantastic.

My husband had the smoked salmon wrap which was also very good. The French fries were also quite good, browned exactly as we asked for them.

I also have to mention the iced tea. Again, brewed by people who care. It was very, very excellent and not your average mop water tasting tea.

Our lunch was so good, we had to try a dessert, just to see. I don't know exactly the name of the dessert, but it's made at the restaurant according to our waitress. It was an almond tart, caramel sauce, and ice cream. My description is not doing it justice. It was SPECTACULAR. In fact, it was better than the dessert I had later that evening at the Inn at Little Washington. Seriously, it was.

From our vantage point on the deck, we could see all the freshly prepared dishes being delivered up the stairs, and they all looked great.

This is a well-run establishment. You should go! We can't wait to go back!

I am not usually one to throw up a one-star review, but we were treated so unnecessarily rudely I had to leave a note about it. We had our dogs with us so eating in the restaurant wasn't an option. However, there are some picnic tables out back and we were going to get food to-go and eat outside with the dogs. When we asked for a to-go menu two different staffers were so rude to us we turned to leave and said never mind. I suppose they didn't want to waste their time with carry out because there are no tips in it. Someone at the bar eating overheard and came to us in the parking lot as we were leaving and told us about Griffin Tavern up the road that welcomes dogs. Why anyone would go to Thornton River Grille when Griffin Tavern is an option I will never know.

We stopped in for brunch around 2p after our tour of Copper Fox Distillery. Hostess seated us right away. Wait staff teamed the service and was excellent with the timing of everything. Crab cake was delicious with lumps of crab. My husband had the chicken salad with applewood smoked bacon that he said "made the dish.

Had a 730 reservation. Place was packed but we were seated right at 730 PM. Wait staff was very attentive. Drinks came quickly. Food order was taken the moment we were finished our drinks. Food came out quickly, had great taste and the temperature of the food indicated it hadn't been off the grill long. Another drink order-drinks came quickly. When we were ready to pay the bill that also was a painless operation. Next time we are in the area we'll make the stop
