I drive through South Boston often and today my wife and I rode through with my parent's for a family member's wedding. At lunch time we came into South Boston and started going through the "chain" places to eat (of which there aren't that many to begin with).
So, then we landed on Smokin' Jakes which we had passed a few visits before. It's in a log cabin type building and the lot had several cars in it.
This is for sure a BBQ joint, and it was great. I had a sandwich and hush puppies along with fries. The fries were fresh cut and the chips (my parents had those) appeared to be as well. The BBQ sauce that was on the tables, we were told, was made in-house. It was very good as well.
This is an order-at-the-counter place. Your food is then brought to you. The cashier took the time to also assist with refills and clean up our mess. The fireplace was kept going and some new wood was cut and added while we were there.
This is nice stop with small town feel. It's not trying to be more than what it should be - just fun joint to get some BBQ!
