We've eaten here on our way to the beach for years. Perfect oysters, fish and beef. Excellent service. Amazing view. Great wine selections.

First night we just wanted a salad...something light. My husband ordered the chopped salad for $7.95 (mixed greens/avocado/bacon/tomatoes/ cheese/vinaigrette dressing) and I got the Wedge salad for &7.95 (iceberg wedge/tomato/bacon/blue cheese crumbles/balsamic vinegar/blue cheese dressing) and two nice refreshing glasses of water. The waitress brought us a nice mini-loaf of bread while we waited (very good and warm). The salads were large enough for a meal for each of us. If you order one as larger salads as a side salad to a meal, you’d better be prepared to split it between two people! Service was friendly and prompt. Restaurant was very clean.
The second night, we had a drink at the adjacent pub during happy hour (4pm-7pm) - $3.00 rail drinks and $3.50 large draft beer. I had a cranberry and vodka rail drink, and unfortunately, it must have been made with the cheapest vodka possible. After sitting outside with our drinks for a while, we went in to the restaurant and spent our gift card that came with our Travelzoo package. My husband got the broiled seafood platter ($26) - he said that it was plentiful and the shrimp was very fresh - the platter included fish, shrimp, scallops, a crab cake, green beans and coleslaw. I had the Chicken Isle of Wight ($26), which was a boneless chicken breast with Smithfield ham and peanuts rolled in the center, lightly coated and fried and then covered with a cream sauce; it was served on a bed of wild rice and came with green beans. The portion was huge. Don't bother with the side salad ($3.75 add on); it wasn't that good (some of the lettuce was wilted and brown) and the meal itself was more than enough food.

The setting is very casual with a view of the Pagan River. That being said, we were surprised that our $12 bottle of wine at retail was marked up to $30. Usually, that much of a markup is at more upscale establishments. Our shrimp and crab spring rolls appetizer were tasty and had just the right crispiness. The crab cakes were not crisp and lacking in flavor. Ordinary tartar sauce and cocktail sauce were offered with the crab cakes rather than a remoulade or aioli sauce which often accompanies crab cakes that cost almost $30. Sides of butter beans and sliced apples with cinnamon were average. The Norfolk special of shrimp, crab, and scallops in garlic butter was average with just a small amount of crab. The fish was swimming in the garlic butter. The French fries with accompanied this dish were limp. Our total bill for 2 was over $100. We don't mind paying that amount for a quality dinner, but we were very disappointed with this one.

Dear Laurava,

I am sorry to hear that our menu did not live up to our price point for you. Smithfield Station is our Family business so when you leave a review such as this we take it to heart, listen, and try to improve based on the issue.

We buy only the freshest local seafood possible have won numerous awards for our crab cakes. Chesapeake Bay Magazine's readers have voted them the reader choice award for five years running.

Every now and then people just don't like them or we fail to do our part to prepair them properly. These instances are few and far between but do happen. Please reach out to me and I can make sure your next visit lives up to our price point for you and thank you for taking the time to review our business.
