My parents are in their 80s and were part of the massive power outage in Virginia during early July. Like may others, they had no power, no A/C and food thawing.

I reserved a room for three days at the Days Inn in Salem, VA as a matter of survival. Fortunately, the inn staff assured me that there were 30 rooms available.

They stayed one night and found out that the power was restored, so they went to check out.

The hotel informed them that the reservation was through Hotels.com, and that the terms were "no refund" - even though they had 30 rooms available.

Hotels.com worked over the course of 10 days to communicate with the manager. Ultimately, the manager said that none of the cost would be refunded.

A potentially life-saving experience was ruined by the greedy grubbing ways of the Manager of Days Inn of Salem. I have no understanding of why they took this step, but that's the purpose of TripAdisor - to shine the light of day on those who rip off the elderly and helpless. Days Inn of Salem, VA did this - please consider the morals of the management when deciding whether to use them.

Room Tip: Stay away from Days Inn of Salem!

Due to a severe storm that came through our area we were forced to stay in hotels for 6 days. The first two nights were stayed here. Room rates were $40-$50 over all the other area hotels during this emergency. The staff was not at all pleasant. During our 2nd nights stay the ceiling started to drip from an area that showed obvious signs of prior leaking, during the night the plaster from the ceiling began to fall. It land on the table, the floor & my 16 yr olds head! I informed the staff of this as i was checking out & stated that their prices were too high as well, to all I received a "oh, sorry" reply. Nothing else! An hour later I received a call stating that a blanket was missing & I would be charged for it! I called and told the women that the blanket had been on the floor, soaking wet and full of plaster! She stated "oh your was the room that had that problem". NEVER stay here! It's a danger to everyone from falling plaster as well as extremely high rates & uncaring staff!

The evening clerk was very helpful with my request of a quiet room. The room is spacious; The air-conditioner was very loud, the low fan setting does not work. The filter needs cleaning; so do all those dusty & stained lamp shades. The shower water only shoots out from 1/4 of the holes, no stopper for the bath tub. The warm lamp does not work. Toilet was very slow to flush... The bed was OK.
The location is just cross a main street to a shoppping mall with a large grocery store; quite convenient.
So this hotel can be better if the management will spend more effort in maintenance & cleanliness.

Reserved room for one night (Roanoke College orientation) with a credit card that was compromised several weeks later. I forgot to contact hotel to update card number when bank issued new card. When husband & son checked in after 8 hours of driving, was rudely told by clerk that card was invalid and they had to pay for room right then. They were actually stunned at her attitude. Husband asked if they could contact me for new card number, as he brought some minimal cash for other expenses and we wanted to put the room on the card. She refused and he ended up having to pay cash for the room. They were unimpressed with the quality and general cleanliness of the room (even for a "budget-friendly" hotel), but were too tired to go another round with Rude Desk Clerk. Previously stayed at the Holiday Inn on Litchell Rd, will definitely stay there again. A little more $$, but definitely worth it.

the days Inn is convenient for salem and off interstate 81. IT has a good price for a room going for it if you book in advance like the Days inn program (2 weeks) . The Breakfast is continental and OK. For traveling and needing a place to sleep and go on, use it. But it is not for an extended stay. Clean and front desk is adequate. I would go into Salem for meals. price is the best thing going for hotel with convenient location 1-2 miles from I-81.

Room Tip: get room for king bed and where you can be near your vehicle for convenience.
