“Lovely historic hotel”
Reviewed December 2, 2010

The Hotel Roanoke was a great place to stay in downtown Roanoke. We have recently started to stay in more historic properties on our travels and we were glad we chose The Roanoke. The lobby was beautiful with lots of comfy sitting areas, paneled walls, etc. and it was decorated for Christmas.... a bonus that jump started our Christmas spirit. There were also lots of photos showing the history of the hotel. Our room was an end room on the 2nd floor, with two double beds and it was very spacious. The room was clean and updated in decor. It was a cold and blustery day so we had to really pump up the heat in the room, but it was fine. There was not that much to do in the downtown area, but we did enjoy the outdoor market and many shops in the square. The hotel has an enclosed walkway that takes you right into the square area... another plus for this hotel.

We were traveling on Thanksgiving Day, and chose the Hotel Roanoke on the mistaken belief that as guests staying in the hotel we could dine in the restaurant. The restaurant was "sold out" for their Thanksgiving buffet, and management made no effort to accomodate hotel guests such as ourselves. On arrival we were told we could call the restaurant repeatedly to see if they had a cancellation, or have a sandwich in the bar. Apparently management did not consider saving a few of the hundreds of spots in the buffet seatings for guests. The front desk personnel could not have cared less; they left it to us to contact the restaurant to see if a vacancy occurred. I wonder if the hotel and restaurant are on the same team.

The hotel is a renovated old classic. Rooms are small, which is to be expected, and have character. The furnishings are fine. Our room had no closet, but a wardrobe provided a couple of feet of hanging space. The room was equipped with a flat panel TV, with a good selection of channels, including some in HD. Internet access is ten bucks a day, and self parking, which involves a hike up and down a hill, is $7. Rates for local and long distance calls are among the highest I have seen anywhere, so bring your cell phone.

I would recommend the Hotel Roanoke, unless you arrive on a day the restaurant has some holiday function.

Dear kiwifan, thank you for your review of the Hotel. I am a troubled to read your review regarding the Thanksgiving buffet. While the buffet is extremely popular, we do allot seating for our in-house guests and try to accommodate everyone as much as possible. Our team works very hard to provide an outstanding product, and we are better than what you experienced. Your review will be shared with our staff. We hope you can visit again in the near future. Kind regards, Gary Walton, General Manager.

I came for the Toastmasters conference. What a great event. The hotel was a great deal and they had no problem with any of my special (ie. random) requests throughout the weekend. I wanted to especially note that the front desk staff were always cheerful and helpful to the utmost and there was always someone opening the front doors for us. The hotel itself is so picturesque and historic in the best way. When I checked my bed for bugs (just in case), the only thing a found was a hair. My friend noted that the stairs down to the parking would be improved if there were a little luggage ramp next to them, she said that is more common in Sweden then the US, but it would be a good idea, as the other choices are - check out car and then check out hotel, drag rolling luggage down stairs, down grass, or walk on the road. I carried my bags, so just passing along the thought for anyone interested.

We had numerous small disappointments and poor experiences during our 2-day stay that added up to a less-than acceptable stay. Read on for details.

We booked our room months ago and recently received an email offering us an upgrade to a corner room for a small price. We accepted. We then had a relative decide to come at the last moment, couldn't get a room as the hotel was booked, so we called to see if they could add a rollaway to our room. They said they could. We confirmed this when we checked in. We ended up with a room on the second floor, 3 rooms down from the elevators and overlooking a gravel roof, 1 king size bed and not a bit of extra space. Happily, our relative arranged other accommodation but the hotel certainly let us down.

Our other poor experience was in the bar. We were there with our relatives, my husband received a cell call and stepped away from the table. The waitress swept through and picked up his half-full drink before we knew it. When he asked her about it she was very defensive, said it was empty, brought the empty glass back to the table (it was a completely different shape) and never said another word about it nor did she bring him another drink. Not my idea of how one is treated at a Hilton.

There were various other small irritations (couldn't turn off a light etc.) and charges for everything (i.e. parking, internet access) that weren't terrible or unexpected but added up to a poor overall experience.

We won't stay here again. That makes me sad because I used to adore this hotel. Phooey, Hilton.

My husband and I recently stayed here during a Virginia Tech football weekend. The place was full of VT Alumni which added to the festive feel. It's a 150 year old Hotel that was refurbished about 15 years ago and it still has an original feel to it. It is tastefully appointed, although not luxurious. The executive lounge was small and the breakfast satisfactory, but evening appetizers left a bit to be desired. We ate in the grill which was very attractive and had a fun atmosphere with live entertainment on the weekend. The cuban sandwich should be ordered again, but avoid the chicken quesadilla. The bellmen were very willing to help, but not pushy if you wanted to do things on your own. They even have a special covered area to park motorcycles. It made for a nice getaway, although we used points to pay for our stay and i think it may be on the pricey side.

The hotel is centrally located in downtown Roanoke and is an impressive restoration. The main lobby walls are beautifully paneled in a dark finished wood. Adjacent to the main lobby is a large sitting salon off of which the Pine Room lounge is located. The lounge is comprised of two rooms one of which is furnished with a pool table which draws an extensive amount of activity. An adjacent patio with al fresco seating completes the lounge facility. The Regency dining room is located on the opposite side of the main lobby. It is a magnificent dining venue that is reminiscent of hotel dining of another era. The peanut soup is characterized as a Regency specialty; however, one should be forewarned that even its modest portion is the rich equivalent of a jar of peanut butter for an appetizer!
The valet and front desk service was prompt and attentive. Guests booked into the hotel’s executive wing are afforded the use of a private lounge where hors d’oeuvres and continental breakfast are served as appropriate to the time of day. The lounge is also stocked with complimentary soft beverages.
The room was nicely appointed although quite small. Appointments included a large desk and chair, an armoire, lounge chair and flat panel television. The bathroom was also quite small.
The hotel charges $9.95 per day for internet access and $7.00 per day for self-parking or $12.00 per day for valet parking.
The only negative was the considerable noise from freight trains which operated throughout the night across the street from the hotel. Perhaps booking a room in the rear of the hotel might eliminate or at least alleviate this distraction.

Dear NewJerseyMember, thank you for your review of the hotel, we are pleased you enjoyed your stay and will review your posting with our staff. While being a Historic Hotel of America, our renovation carefully preserves the traditional look of our unique and historic hotel while adding more modern touches today’s travelers expect. The Hotel does feature multiple room configurations and I can assure you that rooms in the back of the Hotel wouldn’t hear the trains from their rooms. We hope you can come back to visit Roanoke soon.

The Hotel Roanoke is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy Southern hospitality and ambiance. Located downtown is is easy to access restaurants, shops and night life without going near your car. Even better is staying on the property to be pampered in the spa with a massage or facial. The dining room is excellent. The steaks are outstanding, and the crab is delicious. Don't miss the chocolate soufflé for desert. The lobby is beautiful. The rooms are fine. Service is top-notch. I highly recommend this hotel.
