“All splendid except the most important”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

Impressive structure, admirable facilities, excellent service, comfortable rooms. If only the air-conditioning had worked. The weather was quite warm and muggy; we really needed the a/c, but it produced only noise (a lot of noise), but no air flow, much less cool air flow. It was too late and we were tired to address the problem that night, but next morning we reported it to the desk, asked that the a/c be fixed or our room changed. When we returned that evening, neither had happened, but again it was too late and we were too tired to move to another hotel). The following morning we again reported the problem, were told that repairing the hotel's a/c systems was a work in progress. When we returned that evening the a/c still emitted only noise. Fortunately, the weather then cooled a bit, and sleeping became merely uncomfortable rather than miserable, as it had been that first night, when, whenever we'd managed to get to sleep, we'd be periodically awakened by rivulets of sweat trickling down our bodies onto the soaked sheet beneath us. Not much use in a hotel’s having a luxurious environment, if it fails in its prime purpose - providing a good night’s sleep.

Not a grand old lady I am afraid

My heart started to sink when the guest in front of me was told that his pre-paid booking for a double bed could not be honoured because the hotel had two large weddings and he would have to accept a room with two single beds.

My turn resutled in a small room on the fifth floor - in effect in the attic. This was the result of much time spent by the Receptionist trying to find a room for the whole of our stay - again we had prepaid os I do not understand why it was a struggle to find the room we had paid for and was presumably "set aside" within the system.. The window in the room was a small dormer style with a table in front of it. Result - a dark room and a real struggle to reach across the table to close the curtain.

The Executive Lounge was to date the worst at any Hilton we have stayed in. I am pretty sure it was simplly a converted bedroom. Just about enough room for three circular tables and 9 chairs plus a sofa. Small quantiity of poor quality breakfast items and one morning no coffee because the machine had broken.

The melee outside the restaurant on Sunday morning for breakfast was sad to see "the girl has said there is a table for 4 if we go now - but we have to get in there straight away or she will give it to another group"

Outside pool and fitness area was fine and most public rooms seemed OK

A very impressive hotel. A property from days gone by. You need to make sure you can enjoy all that is offered by giving yourself ample time on the premises. I used it as a short overnight bedroom, but wish I could have enjoyed more of what this beautiful property offered. I will plan my next trip to Roanoke so it can be more leisurely and I will stay here again. This grandeur is what I expect from DoubleTree.

I love the beds in DoubleTree hotels. They are always comfortable. The room was spacious, well appointed and comfortable. I gave the 'Cleanliness:Very good' rating because there were 2 -3 small pieces of paper/cellophane on the floor. Otherwise the room and bathroom were perfect.

The rooms are spacious and nice. Valet Parking 12 per day. If you park yourself you must walk up a hill. Was told valet parking 12 to park gave to guy 20. When came in realized they actually charge the twelve to the room. Nice 20 dollar tip for valet parking. Check out is 11:00. Late check out is not available even for HH member. Room service good.

This is a beautiful and historic hotel. Make a point to stay here if you never have just for the experience. We were greeted by the hotel staff and they remembered that it was my daughters birthday and made a point to make her feel extra special. Even the next morning they brought her a special treat at breakfast to wish her a happy day!

The Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center is an absolutely beautiful facility with an incredible staff. Our every need was met with a friendly, accommodating staff. The food was delicious and the drinks were too! We attended a wedding and spent three nights. Our whole family had rooms on the same floor, so were able to have that "family feel" even away from home. The wedding ceremony and reception were on sight and it couldn't have been more perfect. The room was stunning.

I would absolutely recommend this hotel for any function. The lovely town of Roanoke is a quick stroll through a covered bridge. Great stay! Kathy N.
