“Great Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2013

The hotel is beautiful and my children and I enjoyed our stay here. The room we had was really large with two double beds and gave us plenty of room. The Valet service is excellent as is the Pool, Hot tub and Gym. Or course we loved the cookies and ate way too many.
We have family in Roanoke and will stay here again when we visit. It is a lovely hotel with lots of charm.

I will stay here again.

If I had a wish list for my return stay I would ask that there is a way to get a cup of to go coffee other than your room little coffeemaker or having to order room service (Like somewhere in the lobby.) Also that the bar at the Pine room open earlier for drinks and food. We kept needing food when the restaurant was closed so we had to order room service 2 times. Once at the pool and once in the Pine Room. (The food was very good by the way) There were other people that were hanging out in the Pine Room that wanted to order drinks and food that didn't because no one was there and they didn't want to order room service for beers) It would be nice If the restaurant isn't open that the pub would be so that there is somewhere to go.

Room Tip: The Jumbo Room with two double beds was very large and nice for the three of us.

Lovely historic hotel. Impressive exterior and public spaces. Attentive to HHonors status and suite upgrade provided. However, rooms and corridors in need of entire renovation - beginning to show age. Executive lounge available but quite average.

Visited in June 2013 for a weekend convention. The facilities are excellent in every way. Rooms are modern and clean. Restaurant was excellent. Pool gets shaded early in the afternoon is only negative. Skywalk connects to revitalized downtown district. Lots of shops and restaurants within walking distance.

Room Tip: Rooms facing front of hotel and downtown have good views.

The Hotel Roanoke is one of the most historical features in the region and one of the grandest hotels in which we've stayed. The value is truly excellent for such an environment. Unfortunately the staff was not quite up to the what one would expect for such a facility. They weren't rude, but they didn't go the extra mile, or even the extra foot, either. Housekeeping was disappointing. The room was dusty and they didn't even empty the trash in the room when they came in. Also we were placed next to an extremely rowdy wedding party that ruined our first night's sleep.

I really enjoy staying in these grand hotels around the country and I was glad to see that the City of Roanoke and Virginia Tech teamed up to preserve a real beauty. I really love the charm of the art deco interior. The lobby bar was supposed to conjure up images of a WWII officer's club, but since I wasn't around during WWII, I guess it was lost on me. The bar was very nice and clubby with a lot of woodwork. Our room was very spacious and quiet. The only complaint I had with the room was that the A/C blower was quite noisy. I figured I could just leave the A/C unit on fan all of the time, because I knew that the on and off cycling would keep me up at night, but unfortunately when the fan is on the A/C is on as well and the room got quite cold very quickly. I just decided to leave the unit off for the night and we slept comfortably. I would suggest to the hotel management (if they are reading this review) that they reduce the speed of the fan coil unit in the rooms to a lower speed. They will be on longer, but it won't be as noisy. The hotel is also convenient to downtown Roanoke as there is a footbridge over the railroad tracks to downtown, where there are a nice collection of restaurants and bars that were actually open on the Saturday night that we stayed there. We walked to the restaurant that we ate at that evening - First and Sixth, which I highly recommend. Overall, I would recommend this hotel to others staying in Roanoke.

This email is directed to Gary D. Walsh, General Manager.
From the moment we arrived on August 2, 2013, we have experienced disappointment after disappointment since the moment we arrived. The valet/bellhop was uninterested in assisting us with our bags, instructing us to give him our key and leave our bags in the car until we had a room key in hand. We were unwilling to do so due to the oppressive nature of the waiver required to use valet services, including waiver of GROSS NEGLIGENCE.

When we had key in hand, the bellman/valet was finally willing to help us with our bags. When he arrived in our room around 3 pm, he dropped the bags off quite unceremoniously. Our room did not have the usual "Welcome" book/notebook, which meant that we had no information whatsoever about the hotel. When we asked the bellman whether the hotel restaurant was open, he gave us erroneous information. In fact, everything he told us was completely incorrect.

Relying on the bellman's information, we proceeded to the Regency Room only to be informed that the restaurant had closed at 2 pm. We were told that we could call for room service from outside the pub. This was the first we heard of room service because, as previously stated, our room was not equipped with a welcome notebook. We were not interested in sitting in a hall ordering room service; thus, we left the hotel to eat.

Upon our return, we called the front deck to request a welcome notebook so that we could learn what, if any, amenities this hotel offers. We also requested an ice bucket because our room did not come equipped with such. By this point, I wasn't surprised that an ice bucket was a special request item.

Rather than delivering the welcome notebook, we received a xerox copy (and a poor quality copy) of the room service menu. We were unable to obtain the notebook until we insisted upon it.

We are in town for a family wedding. We are traveling with our 2 year old granddaughter. We were promised that Hotel Roanoke was the nicest hotel in town. I certainly hope that we were misinformed--I cannot fathom that a hotel offering such poor service could possibly be the best hotel in Roanoke.

This is not our first time to stay at Hotel Roanoke. It will be our last.

The public areas were all lovely and roomy, the room too was very comfortable and attractive. It included free internet. The only negative was that it's right next to the train tracks and while the trains go very slowly through town, I still felt the rumbling and sometimes heard brakes squeaking
