“The best Hotel in South West Virginia”
Reviewed July 7, 2013 via mobile

The beauty of this great Southern hotel is almost overwhelming. It is too pretty for words. The rooms are charming and spacious Their restaurant is gourmet perfect. The night that we ate there, the Red Hatters Club was having a function.100s of ladies, all proudly wearing their famous red hats. How very cool is that. The front desk is staffed by the neatest and friendliest young people anywhere. I think that most go to Virginia Tech just up the road in Blacksburg. Take a short walk through downtown Roanoke for local charm and fantastic shops. Spend a Friday evening at the Jamboree in neighboring Floyd. You'll never forget the amazing bluegrass, both on stage and in the streets. The best part is watching the locals dance inside once the band gets cooking. Make reservations and take a seat early due to the popularity of this charming place. It fills up fast and everyone wants to sit by the stage. Squeeze in a stay at the Hotel Floyd while you're there and have breakfast downtown the next morning; you won't REGRET it. You're very welcome in advance.

Wow- obviously this was not built as a Doubletree it is beautiful and in a nice area. The staffing was a nightmare from check in to check out-- maybe they just couldn't handle a full hotel- but management was no where to be found-- I hate to trash a review, but Hilton had this page as part of the survey, so I am filling it out

We were in town for a wedding, and the hotel was perfect. The staff was exceptionally helpful when things went awry, the on site restaurant was delicious and the pub was a fun place to watch sports. The pool was hugely popular with the kids, the rooms were nothing short of magnificent.

I stayed at Hotel Roanoke this past Saturday night for a wedding. The cost was about $180, and that was allegedly at a "wedding rate" and included the $7 self-parking fee (valet is $12). First of all, let me say that I have stayed here about 3-4 years ago, and while I knew it wasn't worth the price tag, it wasn't a nightmare of a sleeping experience.

Check-in to the property is at 4 PM, but they allowed me to check-in at 3 PM, because the wedding had a bus picking up attendees from the hotel and it started at 5 PM. Check-out is at 11 AM, so not exactly sure why it takes 5 hours to clean the room anyways. The check-in employee forgot to give us the wedding bag associated with my wedding (which I was listed as being a part of specifically on the computer) and really only cared about which way she was going to go home in 15 minutes.

We got showers and ready, and off to the wedding we went. Until the night, that was the rest of our experience with the hotel. The hotel looks cool from the outside, looks cool when entering it, and the restaurants inside it are expensive and would be classified as "fine" dining. When arriving home from the wedding at around 11:30 PM, we then proceeded to have a miserable sleeping experience.

We were on the 4th floor, the windows do not open, and there is no balcony, so I figured noise would not be an issue. That is, however, until I realized the old wooden door to the bedroom serves about as much purpose as a piece of paper. Every single person, no matter if they were loud or just walking down the hall talking to each other for the next 3 hours, could be heard clearly and their voice even echoed to make them sound louder. The door, room, and hotel are old, but there has been no attempt to seal off the door or make them thicker. There is no catch on the doors throughout the property, so when you allow the door to close, it slams shut, and once again, can be heard clearly if within 8 rooms each way of your own. It probably didn't help that drunk people constantly flowed into the hallways and different rooms for the next 3-4 hours, just making sleeping an impossible task. I had a good amount of alcohol in my system, and normally fall asleep without issue, so when I couldn't go to sleep there are issues.

Possibly during the mid-week, these issues do not occur, but I do not know. It is possible that 3-4 years earlier for the other wedding, I was part of the problem to other patrons attempting to sleep since I too stayed up until about 3 AM on that night. If so, I got what was coming to me. The room is nothing special, and is definitely not elegant as such an old hotel should be or for the price. You receive 2 towels, 2 hand towels, and 2 washclothes, 4 pillows, and an air conditioning unit that is very loud (and still doesn't even drown out the hall voices) everytime it runs. The bathroom is an average size at best, with no fan or nice amenities.

Honestly, the only thing nice about this hotel is the location. You are within easy walking distance to downtown Roanoke, but I'm sure another hotel has to be downtown somewhere. Oh yeah, how can I forget! I forgot about the multiple trains/tracks that runs on the south/east part of the hotel! So, if you are one of the lucky guests on that side of the hotel, prepare to hear a train moving along, switching out cars, throughout the night. At least it doesn't blow a horn, but wow.

Enjoy your stay at the Hotel Roanoke!

The staff was very helpful with directions and the location of the hotel was great for easy walking to all kinds of restaurants and entertainment. The property is very large with beautiful grounds but felt very cozy and comfortable.

My husband and I have stayed at this hotel several times and are always pleased with the stay. The beds are so comfortable we get a good night's sleep, which is really important in a hotel. This time we did have a few glitches with service. Making the reservation was fast and friendly but the bellman/valet and the front desk staff seemed to be a little unprofessional with excessive talking and interactions with each other. Possibly they were taking a break after a hard day, but we did have to go to the front to check on our bags after we were told they would be brought to the room and they were just sitting there while everyone was standing around talking. We will definitely be back to stay in the fall

When we saw this hotel we thought it would be way out of our league. Thanks to Barbara in the visitor centre opposite, we had a very good rate for the room. What a beautiful hotel. As it was a Double Tree, we had the usual chocolate cookies, which are wonderful. The hotel is massive, it has it's own private walkway to the town, which was again wonderful, a jewel that was unexpected. There are lots of old photo's around the hotel showing it's history. We chilled out in the outdoor pool and spa which was appreciated in the heat. The hotel has it's own restaurant and bar which is well frequented and seems very popular with all age groups. There is also an Irish Pub in the town called Flaherys that has very good food and the most friendly barmaid ever named Erin. Lovely area, lovely hotel.
