The building is very interesting - a work of art in itself. They have a great kid's activity area with many fun things to do. The exhibit space is small but the artwork is well presented. The standing collection is nothing special, but there is always at least one really interesting piece to see. Definitely worth a visit.

Well, can you imagine in western Virginia, there stands a world class art museum?
The 4 year old building itself is a modern piece of art work, standing out amidst the traditional cityscape of downtown Roanoke. Designed by Randall Stout, who worked with the famous Frank Gehry in Spain, it mirrors the geography of the surrounding the area. Peaks of glass and metal represent the surrounding mountains, stone from the Virginia Tech quarry creates interior walls, glass stairs reflect the waterways; all charm the visitor. One can't help to compare it to the 'Effiel Tower', for it's presence, both physical and social in this setting.
The six plus galleries hold varied and interesting exhibits for any taste without overwhelming the visitor: classic paintings from American artists - Rockwell, Pendergast, Homer, Sargent; a room full of Judith Leiber purses. There's always an assortment of traveling exhibits, at the time of our visit: a magnificent Photo Journal Essay on the petroleum industry; an extensive Fabrege display; a small roomful of 'Unusual Folk' art.
They make it very easy to tour: admission is free to all, everyday thanks to Advanced Auto Parts and very easy to access in the downtown setting.
Put this one on your 'must see list'!

The Taubman has been very controversial in Roanoke. I like the space and I think they have done a good job of displaying their collection and bringing in interesting exhibits. I also think they have done a good job of outreach to the community to get the locals involved and engaged. If you are visiting the area, include this in your vacation plans.

This is a little gem of an art museum. It's especially nice now that Advanced Auto Parts gave a grant to allow free admission~
