My husband and I usually go to our favorite restaurant when we are able to get a night out on the town. This particular weekend we decided to go outside of our comfort zone and try something new. We were HAPPY we did!!!!! We decided on Local Roots and ordered the 5 course tasting (so we could sample a variety of options). Each plate was presented in a perfect fashion. The flavors were amazing and each plate trumped the one before. We left fully satisfied and could not stop raving about our awesome experience. A must if you live any where near Roanoke or are visiting the Star city.

Dear TravelTyme2012, Of course, we at Local Roots are so pleased that you so thoroughly enjoyed the food and your experience at Local Roots. Thank you for stepping a little outside your comfort zone and finding us. And, thank you for writing about it. Yes, the five-course tasting menu is a lot of fun and gives the chef a chance to be use each course as a palette for his culinary and aesthetic artistry. Sounds as if you truly appreciated what you were served. Thank you again. We look forward to your next visit to Local Roots. Best, Diane Elliot, Owner

A few months ago I wrote a somewhat negative review of this restaurant, and hadn't been back since then. It was an accurate assessment of our experience that day, but we wanted to give them another chance, and are glad we did. On a recent Tuesday evening, we stopped in because of a wine tasting promotion we'd heard about. They were tasting 3 wines, and gave a generous pour so we could get a good taste and discover the flavors of each. We were served a wonderful cheese selection to go with our tasting. The cheese board was very attratively arranged with various condiments along side that were very creative. We'd definitely order that again. We selected a glass of one of the wines and had that with an order of mussels. We've had mussels in just about every restaurant in the area, and these were outstanding. We were just there for a light meal, and this selection completely served that purpose. We sat at the bar and very much enjoyed the atmosphere there. My only suggestion resulting from this visit would be more comfortable bar stools. I wouldn't have been able to sit there for more than an hour, but maybe that's what they're going for.

Dear mswm80, Thank you so much for being willing to give Local Roots another try and for taking the time to write about it. I like to think that your latter experience was more indicative of who we are and what we do at Local Roots than your former, but we appreciate your original review as we learn from guests' feedback. Yes, the cheese platter and the mussels are very popular. I am glad you enjoyed them. As for the stools, if/when you come in again, please request a cushion. We keep several on hand for those who might get uncomfortable on our chairs or stools. They seem to do the trick. Again, thank you for trying us again. We look forward to seeing you again.

On Sundays, Local Roots offers a very limited, prix fixe menu. Tonight it was thoughtfully crafted and tasty. I liked the fact that the portions were reasonable--not the huge portions offered by so many restaurants today. You will be satisfied, but won't leave with a go-box. That said, the bread was really skimpy--one very small muffin half. Local Roots is very noisy on Friday and Sat. nights,, so we avoid it, and is also noisy if busy at lunch. So if you are bothered by that, stick to less-busy times. Service was just fine, and the restaurant is kept immaculately clean.

Dear chiknlvr, As always, we at Local Roots are appreciative of your taking the time to write a review of your recent experience at Local Roots. Of course, we are so happy that you enjoyed your food. As for the small amount of bread you received, please do not hesitate to ask for more bread, we will gladly send you out more. We want our guests to be fully satisfied with their food and experience. As for the noise, it is a challenge for us as we have so many hard surfaces in our dining room. we have addressed this somewhat by putting sound-proof material underneath most of our dining tables. We are still looking for ways to help the situation without resorting to unattractive sound baffles hanging in each corner. - stay tuned on this one. Our chef prides himself on having an immaculate kitchen which is scrubbed down every evening and our dining floor is mopped twice daily. As for the to-go boxes, we do in fact use them quite a bit, even including Sunday evenings, though, you are right, we do not aim to totally load people up with food but surely want them to have plenty. We look forward to your next visit to Local Roots. I would be pleased to meet you. Best, Diane Elliot,Owner

By far one of the best dining experiences my wife and I have had in a long, long time. I Had done a bit of research on dining out in Roanoke (we were stopping there on our way to Nashville from Cape May) and came across Local Roots. The menu and concept was perfect. I looked it up on the web and read some great, and not so great things, but we gave it a go anyway (probably because with almost every negative review, the owner responded with a quite logical and thoughtful response).

Quaint theater district store front. We were seated on time for our reservation. Our server, Liz was great. She understood the menu and made great recommendations. She and the rest of the staff never missed a beat.

Textures of Beets, PEI Mussels (in the most perfect rich, bacon - yes bacon - white whine sauce) started our meal. Our main courses were NC Black mackerel and Border Springs Farm lamb shank. Local, fresh and artfully well prepared. The wine selection was very good but the drink highlight for me was the habenero cilantro margarita. Really refreshing.

Dessert was a treat. Homemade mint ice-cream with white chocolate covered blueberries, wasabi dust and who knows what else, but it was incredible.

Now for a small dose of reality... the couple seated next to us could not get what they had ordered because the kitchen had run out of the item. The couple seated on the other side of us waited for quite some time before they were served, so some of the reviews seem valid. Timing and service, based on my observations, seemed to be more on the server than the restaurant. As for running out of a menu item, that is to be expected when you are serving only fresh local foods.

Now I just have to discover a reason to visit Roanoke again. Local Roots is worth the trip.

I love this place! A friend and I went for dinner one night recently (6/2). We enjoyed the menu with fantastic service and fantastic hard cider. The food was very, very good! The menu was easy to understand and even had foods I'd never heard of before, so it felt familiar, yet adventurous. Our server was polite and helpful, even double checking ingredients and answers to our questions. As a result, the gluten free, sugar free needs of our party were met and we were put at ease.

My friend started out with a salad that was exactly what she wanted while I had a soup that was a 'Plan B' when the menu item I had first ordered was out. Never have I been so glad to eat a substitute! This pale green vichyssoise tasted like spring in a bowl. I didn't know potato soup could taste like a breath of fresh air!

As our entree, we both enjoyed a sirloin dish that was beautifully presented and very earthy. It had beans and beets with it as well as some other deliciousness. I loved the quality of the food as well as the mix of flavors. We drank one of the fantastic hard ciders that were on the menu. It was crisp, light, and wonderful for a spring dinner.

The restaurant building itself was visually interesting and open, yet comfortable. Very clean and well decorated, it has different kinds of tables that would really make the dining experience different. It varies from the more private booths to the tables in the windows where you can watch the entertaining foot traffic of the Grandin community. All in all, this is a fantastic place to enjoy a meal!
