“Friendly luxury!”
Reviewed May 17, 2010

Our arrival was warm and welcoming. At our request, our hostess recommended an excellent Italian restaurant in the area and printed out driving directions for us. Our room was truly luxurious -- from the lovely decor, to the spotless, totally updated adjoining bath, to the cozy robes and throw provided, and the king size bed under canopy that completely enveloped us and gave a wonderful night's sleep. Our breakfast was so delicious -- as were the cookies that were left out for us in the previous evening. I could have stayed forever!

Ron and Claire are a wonderful team who use only the best of the best to make this place what it is. We just returned from honeymooning at this location and found it to be both romantic and classy. We are still full from the wonderful breakfast Claire served us at 7:35 PM. That should say something about this place. Best breakfasts we have ever had in our lives!

We selected the Inn based on the recommendations from TA. We stayed overnight while our car was being serviced. The Inn was easily found although the alley entrance is a bit tricky. The Inn is located on a busy main street with a considerable amount of traffic. The Inn was an abandoned turn of the century home that has been wonderfully restored. The interior work is amazing--not your usual "slap paint over the moldings" type of remodel. We arrived at 3 pm and did not find anyone in the home. After a bit of exploration we found an office with the owner, Claire. She showed us to our room on the first floor. We selected the room to avoid stairs and to have a king size bed. The room was small but adequate. The bed was comfortable and the linens top quality. The bathroom included a hydrotherapy tub that I appreciated being able to enjoy. We took a short nap before dinner and Claire was kind enough to give us directions to a movie we had indicated we were interested in seeing. We had a restful night and did not notice the traffic. Breakfast was served in the living room where we could watch the tv. They serve incredible banana bread, along with a quiche, fresh fruit, pan-fried potatoes, and pancakes. It was a delightful stay. A few comments for those planning a stay: it is not walking distance to the downtown; the house is dark and there are no real views to enjoy, hot water is an issue (the tub filled up once but after 1 half hour of soaking a refill attempt yielded cold water).

I am from PA. And not that familiar with the Roanoke area. A friend and I wanted to surprise a mutual friend (who lives in Roanoke) for her 50th Birthday by giving her a weekend away from "ordinary life". While scanning the remaining list of hotel/sBB possibilities on line, I came across the Black Lantern Inn, took my chances and booked the Skyline room.
Words cannot express how impressed we were. The Inn is so adorable and beautiful. Pulling up the gravel drive, one can't help but notice the amazing landscaping surrounded by a full stone wall intimately lit. The back of the Inn almost makes you feel like you are in the middle of the woods.
fAs we made our way to the back porch, we were greeted by staff member, Ron who welcomed us and proceeded to give us the grand tour of the Inn along with its amazing history. The first thing that got my attention besides the warmth of home was the pleasant aroma of freshly baked goods. The inside of the Inn is as immaculate as the outside with an extraordinarily clean feeling of newness yet historic. Hardwood floors and/or thick carpeting aligned the halls, study, and bedrooms; while ceramic tile flooring lies in the bathrooms and I believe the kitchen areas as well.
This Inn offers private living quarters on each of its three floors. Bedrooms are tastefully decorated for various occasions. Moreover, each floor is complete with a private bathroom and kitchen area. Our bathroom was spotless and had all the little extra amenities you would find in an upscale hotel. Soft white towels and heavy cotton robes were always readily available being replaced each day with fresh ones.
We thoroughly enjoyed being served breakfast in our private dining area. It was both superb and plentiful. Fruit, protein, and just enough sweets are served at your desired time. If you indulge, you will definitely consider skipping lunch.
At t the end of each evening, we almost couldn’t wait to wrap ourselves up in the freshly clean linens, hop into a comfortable bed and rest our heads on those heavenly fluffy pillows.
Need some time alone? Check out the media entertainment room located on the first floor featuring a small library filled with historic facts, places of interest within the city of Roanoke, big screen TV, internet access, etc... And comfortable seating for simply lounging.
Our favorite retreat was sitting outside on the second floor covered patio overlooking a spectacular view of Mill Mountain Star, which is sure to evoke a heightened sense of peacefulness within. It certainly makes you feel like you’re “not in Kansas anymore".
One simply cannot say enough about the staff's professionalism and kindness. Always readily available to honor any request or aide in assistance, it was clearly evident that both Claire and Ron take great pride in the Inn, their responsibilities, and ascertain what it takes to provide a home away from home with an extraordinary display of fine hospitality.
You don't often get the opportunity to share in comfort , non-business conversation, and have it equally reciprocated with staff. Just another reason why our departure brought great sadness. You were made to feel like family.
I would highly recommend the Black Lantern Inn. It clearly exemplifies without hesitation why ... Virginal is For Lovers.
Next time my husband and I plan to visit Roanoke, I'll be booking a room at the Black Lantern.
Much continued success and with appreciation for a fabulous stay,
Donna, Margaret , and Hannah.

As New Yorkers, me and my partner are pretty critical when it comes to quality. From the moment we entered the door it was apparent that this place easily exceeds any expectation based on their website. The decor has a modern urban flare that made us feel right at home. The owner, a contractor from Chicago, didn't miss a thing when it came to the structure and restoration of this original home. The dedication to detail, amenities, and overall experience in certainly something to rave about. As if we weren't please enough, we quickly learned that the innkeeper is an excellent cook!! Beautiful place, fantastic food, and excellent service. We both agree that the rating is well above 5 stars!

I stopped by the Black Lantern Inn Bed & Breakfast last week for a tour. The holidays are getting busy and we may possibly have overflow visitors at our home, so was looking for alternative places for family members to stay. Conveniently located close to my South Roanoke neighborhood, the Black Lantern Inn is certainly impressive. The facilities are very clean, beautifully decorated, and although I did not taste the food, Claire, the innkeeper gave me a lineup of what guests could expect, and she certainly seems to have the inn's fare under control. The staff members are also very knowledgable about the area.

The bedrooms are spacious and one even has it's own patio...with a view, I might add, of Roanoke's finest landmark, the Mill Mountain Star atop Mill Mountain.

The Black Lantern Inn is conveniently located to downtown Roanoke, Towers Shopping Center, the South Roanoke neighborhood village and the Carilion Clinic and Riverside Center for Research and Technology. There are many beautiful chuches in the neighborhood. as well.

I will certainly utilize this beautiful addition to Roanoke's list of accommodations whenever I have overflow at home or in making recommendations to individuals visiting the area.

My business partners and I got held over in the Roanoke area. We were not sure where to stay . When someone suggested a quaint little bed and breakfast. We called and they where extremely accomodating. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. They offered us food for dinner and breakfast (they had plenty of it) . The staff was very kind and helpful. I felt very at home. I would take my family there.
