Holiday Inn Roanoke - Tanglewood
Ranked #12 of 40 Hotels in Roanoke
Reviewed November 6, 2007

My husband and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Roanoke-Tanglewood for two nights while in town for a NASCAR race. We had originally wanted to book something closer to the track but this was the closest hotel available at the time and that's why we choose it. Even though it was a good 45 minute drive to the track the scenary there is beautiful and we didn't mind the drive at all.

The hotel is well kept and the rooms were quite nice. Nothing extravagant, but a nice hotel nonetheless. The front desk staff were great, always courteous, helpful and pleasant. We ate onsite one evening in the bar area. This was alright, but they didn't have enough people working and it took almost an hour to get our food that was just ok.

Otherwise though, the ammenities were nice. The area is close to plenty of shopping and restaurants which was very convenient and right near the interstate which made travel easy. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a nice place to stay in the area.

Good quality room (King with sofabed), very attractive price (at least during the week). Priority club members gain access to concierge lounge on 5th floor - basic continental breakfast is complementary but evening cocktails/beer/wine are cash bar. Restaurant (EJ's Landing) is seafood and decent, but does not appear to be the outstanding restaurant mentioned in an earlier review (changed hands?). Location is very good traffic-wise, with easy access to Tanglewood Mall and local restaurants, as well as I-581 to downtown.

I did not think I was in a Holiday Inn. The rooms were clean, service excellent, and the ambience was great. The pool was nice. This was a very nice hotel.

This hotel is a very nice place to stay. The beds are comfortable and they have a pillow menu to fit the way you sleep.(if you sleep on your side or stomach there's a pillow for you and they will bring it to your room)The resturant is a gem high quality food for a reasonable price. It is located in a beautiful place. Our room was very clean and well appointed for the price. The microwave and fridge a plus. I would stay again. My only complaint is the wireless internet didn't work well.

As this was one of the lower priced hotels with good reviews, we chose to stay here on our way along the Blue Ridge Parkway. We were very satisfied with the room's size, amenities, and cleanliness. Concur that the hotel restaurant was a pleasant surprise. While the decor leaves much to be desired, our fish dinners were tasty, fresh and not too expensive. The server suggested a local red wine which was wonderful.

Stayed at the Holiday Inn Tanglewood, July 23 - July 28 with a large group. We had reserved at least 50 rooms for a group of girls and parents travelling with softball teams. The entire hotel was pretty much filled with 10 - 18 yr. old girls and their families.
I felt sorry for anyone who just happened to be staying there!

We attempted to check in early but were told our room was not ready, which was fine. We were given our keys and a time to come back and told our room would be ready at that time. We came back and our room was still not ready. The funny thing was everyone else was able to check in even though our room had been promised hours before. We ended up getting our room after the advertised check in time. The cleaning person was in our room when we came up to the room, she appeared to prefer to just get out of our way, even though I told her we were fine and to take her time. She claimed to have vacuumed, but there is no way she could have by the looks of debris on the carpet. I had to ask her to come back in and vacuum again. I even ended up getting a broom off of her cart and sweeping the bathroom myself. So I was not impressed with housekeeping.

The room itself was pretty nice. It did have some water damage on the ceiling. The bed was fairly comfortable and the sheets were fine. The room had a nice refrig, microwave and coffee maker. It was a decent size and the bathroom was nice also.

The overall cleanliness of the commons areas of the hotel was not the greatest, but then again the hotel was completely booked and I guess it was hard to keep up with girls going in and out some with dirty cleats on. But I did notice trash in the elevators that would be there for hours.

The pool area is nice and also had some tables with umbrellas for shade. Not the newest looking facility but it was ok.

We were provided a continental breakfast as part of our stay as a group, not sure of it was the same as the priority club breakfast but most likely was about the same. It was really nothing more than some not very tasty pastries and equally bad bagels. They did also have cereal. Not impressed with this at all. As Priority Club members at other Holiday Inns we have been offered one hot breakfast for free and one child free. After the first day I inquired about this option and was told that they did not offer that option. We paid to eat breakfast in the dining room at the hotel. One child could eat free with one paying adult, it was just ok, but much better than the alternative. The next day however they told everyone that there would be no more children eating free! I thought that was a Holiday Inn promotion, but evidently not. I guess they just change the rules to suit them at this particular Holiday Inn. When I asked about this at the front desk they looked rather annoyed and were borderline rude about it.

This is the second year we have stayed at this hotel as a group, so we have given them quite a bit of business. We may look at other area hotels for next year, not sure. The location is convenient and being in a full service hotel does have advantages. They had laundry facilities which we needed and plenty of space. Overall it is a decent hotel. Just needs to make a couple small improvements in housekeeping, and do something about the breakfast. The problem is you can stay at another hotel, pay the same or less and get a decent breakfast and have a similar room.
