“French Bistro atmosphere”
Reviewed May 18, 2013

This is a favorite lunch spot for me, although it is open for breakfast and dinner. They feature bakery items for carryout and French styled meals in a kind of cafeteria style. The dining room is styled in a French farmhouse atmosphere.

Made to order salads, fresh soups, quiche, potato Galette, Croque Monsieur are always good, but a little short of what one might expect in France. Some items are made to order and brought to your table. Excellent coffee. Wine is available.

“Provincial French Cafe atmosphere!”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

The La Madeline French Bakery and Cafe, selling breads, cakes, savories, apart from meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner is situated on the ground floor of a mall on 1833 Fountain Drive in Reston, Virginia. Upon walking into the restaurant, the bread and French savory displays meet your eyes with tempting mouth watering offerings! What a delicious looking array of breads, cakes, pastry and quiches.

On the menu are selections of homemade soups; artisan salads; cafe salads; signature crepes; pastas; savory entrees; and French specialties like Quiche Florentine and Quiche Lorraine, Chicken Friand and Spinach Pochette. Ordering is done in a cafeteria line, paying cash at the end of the line for your orders, and what you have taken on your tray.

Two in our group ordered the crepe Romanoff which was a heavily wheaten crepe topped with fresh strawberries and their signature brandy sour cream sauce and cinnamon. This has 280 calories. One of us had the egg omelet with French croissant, and I had the American breakfast plate which came with a choice of toasted bread, baguette, or a croissant and a choice of sausages, bacon or ham, and a choice of how you want your eggs done. I had my eggs scrambled, with a freshly baked crispy crusted baguette, two sausages and a hash brown thrown in. The portions are generous. Coffee and tea are available, with a choice of French or American coffee. There is are selections of other soft drinks as well.

Prices are on the average between $5.69 to $6.49. The amount of calories contained for the dish or selection, are also printed next to the prices. I like the internal decor, although from the outside, you have no hint of what the inside presents. Wood beams, and French themed decorations, wine bottles on the walls, a working fire place, small wooden tables and wooden chairs, quaint black metal grills, wooden cloth pegs, all contribute successfully to producing that ambiance of a little rustic Provincial French cafe! Generally, the food is not fantastic or out-of-this world, but satisfying and mostly acceptable. The service is friendly, attentive and quick. I would come again, mainly to try their baked products that look so delicious!

OPENING HOURS ARE: Monday to Thursday, 6.30am to 10pm. Friday and Saturday, 6.30 am to 11pm. Sunday 7 am to 9pm.
Telephone number: 1-703-707-0704. You are advised to make reservations as the eatery can be full during meal times especially on weekends.

“Good but not great”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

I enjoyed my dining experience here, but I do prefer Panera. My husband and I both got the vegetable soup which was a little lukewarm and a little salty. My tomato and provolone sandwich was not warm enough. I guess it sat for a little while before being brought out. My husband actually asked them to make him a grilled cheese on the multigrain bread, and it was quite tasty. This is a casual diner where you order on a cafeteria line, and they bring the food out to your table. I think the French theme was a little overdone in comparison to the quality of the food. I think Mimi's does the French cafe experience much more successfully. This location was very busy, so the locals must like it.

“Always Excellent”

The fireplace in Winter, the great salads, the sinful tomato basil soup, the sometimes overcooked omelets, and the excellent coffee makes for a pleasant experience.

“Kind of disappointed.”

Luke warm soup, rubbery roast beef sandwich and confused counter staff. Maybe an off night but not what we've come to expect from this chain.
