“One of the best kept secrets in local hiking”

Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship
Reviewed December 16, 2013

Want to hike through the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, crossing log bridges and seeing the ruins of abandoned farm houses, then BRCES is the place for you. Visit in the spring and watch the wildflowers and daffodils bloom amidst the ruins in the woods.

The Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has 10 miles of hiking trails, a working organic farm, and lots of history. It also has 2 areas for camping (as long as you reserve it ahead of time). There is also a beautifully restored old farmhouse that you can rent for overnight visits (up to 10 people). Anyone who lives near by, or is just passing through, should definitely stop by and check this place out.

We come here a great deal with toddlers and grandparents in tow - walking, hiking, and exploring. The trails are easy (kids can walk some and be in a backpack the rest if needed) but scenic - they cover woods, ponds, and creeks. There are old homesteads and opportunities for good photography.

There are farm animals, a working organic farm, camping (by reservation), a farm house (for rent for individuals or groups - we have done this and it has everything), and easy access to Harpers Ferry and Maryland Heights (another superb walk in the area).
