Recently my husband and I stayed at the Renaissance in Portsmouth. It's beautiful, very clean hotel. Beautiful water view from our room. Heating/AC very good. Self-parking costs $10.00.

This hotel/area is truly a diamond in the rough compared to the surrounding area (Norfolk, VA). One of the most beautiful harbors I have seen a long time. I was stationed in Norfolk for over 2 weeks while on Naval Reserve duty and looked for a nice place my wife and I could meet for the weekend. I had checked out the Virginia Beach and Norfolk area and was not impressed at all and would fear for my safety. I stumpled upon Portsmouth and it was like entering the gates of heaven compared to the sorrounding area. Very nice refined island/harbor and the hotel fit right in. Room was clean, service was good (especially considering the Norfolk area). It was a bargain for the price. We did not wonder out of the hotel much, but did eat in the resturaunt which was average. The views over the harbor are to die for. Quite a nice little romantic escape.

What a surprise to find out from the repairman who was sent to open our closet door (no handle) that this was a utility room recently renovated and obviously not complete. Went to lobby and spoke with desk clerk who basically told me she was sorry the room had no guest services, no handle on closet door and various other problems, but to get used to it. Second visit to lobby secured us another room which was not much better than first and to top it off was dirty. Would not stay at this hotel again if accomodations were free.

My husband, baby and I just got back from a busineess weekend in the Virginia Beach area. We couldn't have asked for a better hotel--the hotel is beautiful and the rooms are tastefully done. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The best part of the hotel--the room service. I had a small baby with me so it was difficult to go out to eat so we relied on the room service a lot. This is the first hotel I have stayed at where the room service prices are so reasonable (about 8 dollars for a breakfast of muffins, danishes, bagels, juices, milk, and coffee which is enough for two people and $25 for dinner for two people), the portions are huge, the food comes very fast, the waiters are very friendly and the food tastes great.

As for the other reviews that criticized the parking-I don't really thing the parking structure is that far--it's right next to the hotel--about fifteen steps away.
