Perfect weather added to a perfect overnight stay. An easy drive from Washington, DC. Lovely lodgings- we stayed in the School House, two doors down from the Inn/Restaurant building. Secure and well-kept, country ease with urban standards. Dinner at the Restaurant was outdoors, great food and excellent service.

Room Tip: The upstairs rooms in the School House have balconies with rocking chairs looking west.

We did not stay at Ashby, we stopped in only to try their lunch offerings. One word describes their food: Incredible. There were probably 10-12 menu offerings and 5-6 with wine pairings. First, the setting is gorgeous, beautifully located in the Virginia countryside in Paris.

We ate outside on the covered patio and from when were seated to the time we departed, we were treated quickly, respectfully and professionally.

We tried the pork belly sandwich and salad and both were top notch. The menu is pricey, but I would rather pay a bit more for something great than saving a few dollars for foods and service that were run-of-the mill.

We will go back soon to delve further into their inventive menu.

This is a review of the Ashby as a wedding venue. I came here for an intimate wedding of ~50 people and it was lovely. The ceremony was down on the expansive back lawn about 4pm with beautiful light, followed by cocktails, passed hors d'oeuvres, and 2 carving stations on the back patio. The food was amazing (especially the swordfish and fried everything). There were a few high tops, a few low tables and a bench, so it was definitely an intimate wedding. They shut the music down promptly at 9pm, but they let us have a giant bonfire (with chairs around a stone fire pit) on the back lawn (a corner of it) until well past midnight, which was awesome. The innkeepers were unobtrusive and provided perfect service and event management.

From the location of the inn and it's view of the lovely countryside, the beautifully decorated room and comfy bed to the breakfast that looked like it was prepared for a picture in Gourmet magazine (and tasted as good as it looked), the Ashby Inn was everything we hoped for. Neal is a gracious host and it is apparent when you meet him that he loves what he does. There is great attention to detail visible throughout the inn itself and in the food preparation. One of the things we loved about our stay here was just driving around the roads surrounding Paris, Upperville and Delaplane, it was so picturesque and exciting to see what would be around the next turn in the road or crest of a hill. There are wineries to visit, wildlife too see,and estates that amaze. If you like a romantic getaway, with beauty that abounds this is your place.

Room Tip: The fan room was spacious, sunny and the bed very comfortable, dreamy.

A wonderful Labor Day get-away to Northern Virginia wine country found us at the lovely Ashby Inn for the weekend. We arrived late on the night of our check-in, and although the restaurant had stopped serving, they were kind enough to provide us with a cheese plate and a few glasses of wine to enjoy while we played Clue and Scrabble (their library room is perfect! So well appointed and cozy). We turned in to our room in the Old Schoolhouse (three doors down from the Inn proper) and were so pleasantly taken in by the gorgeous room (Glascock, on the top floor) - even prettier than in the pictures on the website! The next day we spent tooling around the countryside and visiting wineries, before returning for the night and a yummy dinner at the restaurant. Service and setting are both unimpeachable. Can't wait to return!

Last year's anniversary overnight at the Ashby Inn was so lovely, we decided to repeat it this year. It is so tranquil there, we check in on the dot at three o'clock. We stay in the Old Schoolhouse, which only has four rooms. Our private porch with its rocking chairs is terribly inviting; we invariably wind up there with a bottle of wine, and gaze out over the hills and gardens until it is time to go down to the restaurant for dinner.
The food is innovative and outstanding (and almost entirely local) and the wine pairings introduce us to new wines from around the world. The chef and sommelier are justifiably renowned. This far from Washington is not far enough that they do not have to be on top of their game, and they work very hard. There is not a false note on the dinner menu or in the presentation.
So, let's see... the beds are incredible, the baths are elegant and spacious, the long window seat and the wing chairs in front of the gas fireplace are comfy, there are books for a rainy day and a fridge for your snacks, a gift of Port in a decanter on the dresser for after dinner. The peace is absolute. Why would we go anywhere else?

Room Tip: Upper level rooms in the old schoolhouse have cathedral ceilings, which is very nice, but otherwise...

The Ashby Inn is the place to relax and unwind from the stress of daily life. Situated in beautiful Paris, VA, a short trip from the Washington metro area, the Inn is a welcoming oasis in an otherwise hectic pace of DC. The food and wine here are first rate, and Neal Wavra and his staff do an outstanding job of making guests feel welcome and at home. The Ashby Inn is conveniently located near many top wineries. The schoolhouse rooms are tremendous!
