The outdoor countryside setting is lovely. The menu is very limited. The platters are served in large heavy dishes, but there is only a small tapa size amount of food. The assiette de crudites, for about $12, essentially consisted of two radishes and a carrot. Our main courses, at something like $34 each, again consisted of a sliver of food whether it was the meat or the fish, accompanied by tasteless overcooked vegetables. Despite all this, the terrace was packed, which I assume is because of the lovely setting and the fact that there is little alternative available. Too bad; the horse country deserves better.

Thank you very much for this post. One person's perception of portion size and another's are often divergent. Take this review and the posting from March 15th as a perfect example. Where one found the portions to be lacking, the other found them to be larger than expected. We seek to strike a careful balance between providing a value and an appropriate quantity of food. Taken as a singular part, any one of our courses, whether they be a snack, appetizer, entree or dessert, are not designed to be an entire meal. Taken together they are meant to provide guests with an experience that satiates rather than stuffs. The crudite for example is meant to pique the diner's palate with some of the first spring vegetables as given to us from Over The Grass Farm in The Plains. The course matches raw cross sections of candy strip beets, spears of young hierloom carrots, and wedges of breakfast radishes. These vegetables' flavors are amplified by the addition of roasted olives and a bagna cauda emboldened with purple beets. This course is a taste of Spring, and just like it, does not linger long. Rather, it is a short series of bites that set up an entree to follow. Regardless of our intention, we always invite feedback and appreciate all posts and comments as they aid us in continually improving what we offer our guests.

Sincerely,

Neal Wavra

Great little Inn in Paris Virginia. Try the Schoolhouse Rooms for a spacious lodging experience.

Room Tip: There are 4 large Schoolhouse Rooms with decks and a view of the valley.

This review is only for the restaurant. Our meal at the Ashby was outstanding. The food was fabulous and the service was excellent. My only complaints - very minor - was that I wish the meal had been slightly more leisurely, and one of the courses came out before the wine pairing was poured. But those issues are minor to the overall excellent dining experience that we had. We chose to do a few "snacks", two appetizers and two main dishes with the wine pairing, and split a dessert. The portions were larger than we expected, and we struggled to finish dessert. The appetizers & main dishes' wine pairings were perfect. We look forward to returning.

We had a Sunday dinner at the Ashby and stayed one night in the West Dominion Room. The meal was deliciously unforgettable. The oxtail and lamb 'lasagna,' amazing apple and rutabaga soup and oatmeal stout cake with sesame ice cream, cider gel and yeasted caramel were all imaginative dishes I had never seen and probably never will again unless it's at the Ashby this winter. Breakfast was delicious, especially the grilled angel food cake, but otherwise less adventurous than dinner. The room was comfortable and hospitable - the port awaiting us in the room was a welcome surprise. Would love to come again.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper, keep in mind that the roof rattles on windy nights on the upper level...

If you are looking for a memorable evening dining out, this is a destination restaurant and absolutely worth the trip. In several visits over the past year, Chef Tarver King has never disappointed. We usually choose the tasting menu and wine pairings and are always delighted, even when the descriptions suggest something we might never have otherwise ordered. Likewise, it is a pleasure having a very knowledgeable and personable staff serving and explaining each course and the wine to whatever level of detail we need.

Paris, Virginia is a bit off the tourist track but the Ashby Inn Restaurant is totally worth finding and great place to enjoy an evening with friends.

Our small organization met at the Ashby Inn for a three day planning retreat. The experience could not have been better. The innkeepers and all the staff were friendly, helpful, and accommodating, the rooms were clean and nice, and the food was absolutely amazing. Really, really amazing. Every meal was a work of art. We felt like we were in the hands of a master. Even the snacks provided for our work sessions were unbelievable. We could not recommend this place more highly. Go, stay a couple of nights if you can, and even if you can't stay, if you live anywhere in the DC metro area, make a reservation and visit this place for lunch or dinner. You will not be disappointed.

We stayed at Asby Inn on our autumn visit to Skyline Drive. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. The room was beautifully decorated and very comfortable. By far though, meals at the Inn were unforgettable. I had a wonderful lamb dish which was delightful. Likewise breakfast was delicious. The Inn is a little " out of the way." Had trouble getting cell service. If you want to get away from it all, it's perfect.
