“luxurious and comfortable, great location”
Reviewed March 15, 2014

A great place to stay while in paihia. We celebrated our anniversary there, so all we wanted to do was relax pamper ourselves.. it has a great pool area, with a beautiful setting. There was also a heated pool, which was great. However is a 5 minute drive from the party places, so anyone looking to go clubbing may not find its location ideal

A good compromise. There are not many possibilities in Paihia.
Quite a way to walk to town, better take a bike or a cab.
Good possibilities for tours, e.g. across the bay on a schooner, or a bus tour to the cape or to the large sand dune.

Room Tip: Take a room on the upper floor to the back side

Our location in Waitangi is close to the Treaty Grounds and offers great ocean views. We provide a free hourly shuttle to nearby Paihia or you can also rent out our bikes. Stayed here over 2 nights while Conferencing recently. I plumped for a Superior room with water views and received a large 3 roomed suite with extensive 180 deg views. I could park my car within 30m of our room, which was most convenient. The breakfast was of high quality, and kept nicely to temperature, with a chef to cook eggs just as you like 'em. For people who preferred cold or continental or Asian style breakfasts, they were well catered for. Being there for a Conference, we did not get to use the restaurant for lunch or dinner, both of which were part of the conference catering. The room/suite was clean, comfortable and well maintained, although servicing was a little slow. Would I stay there again..............YES!

Room Tip: Try for a superior water view room, you may find yourself upgraded.

the location of the copthorne hotel could not be prettier. it is waterside, just across the road from the historic Waitangi treaty grounds. all of that is ideal. unfortunately, the hotel/restaurant/conference center lacks the quality needed to make this a truly wonderful resort.
the rooms were very average, and in fact our king size bed was actually two singles pushed together with nasty crevasse in the middle. the restaurant/bar had very average food and drink and the service was not great.
all in all, this place could be a lot more than it is.

Room Tip: get a room facing the bay.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment on your recent stay. We certainly have a great waterfront location with the historical Treaty Grounds right next door. I am sorry you have not been satisfied with the restaurant experience. I have taken your comments back to the Food & Beverage Manager and your review will help us improve our service. Also, we are currently looking at changing our bedding configuration. We hope we have chance to welcome you back and provide you with a more satisfactory experience.

This was the most expensive hotel we stayed in whilst in New Zealand. Again, if you are an individual (same as Rotorua and Auckland) they do not seem to care about you. The hotel had a big conference of New Zealnd's JP's which took over the reception, and dining areas. On the night we asked about dinner in the restaurant, as it stated buffet or a la carte. We were told it was buffet only, so we ate in the bar, only to find that customers were having a la carte food in the restuarant. No happy that the reception staff didn't know what was happening. The room was fine, overlooking the pool area and sea. If we came back to the area, we would look at staying closer to Paihia, which is a lovely town with a lot of good eating places and activities.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor, it gives a better view

Thanks for taking the time to give us some feedback on your stay. Our ocean view rooms definitely have one of the best views in the area. Our apologies that the service did not meet your expectations and I will address this with reception. Large conferences are usually contained to the conference facilities including dinner. Feel free to ask for our shuttle which can transport you to Paihia in a short time if you choose to visit again.

This was our third Copthorne in the same week, so we got to compare this with the Auckland & Rotorua facilities.

Firstly, it took us about 3+ hours to drive here from Auckland, the last hour via very winding & steep hilly roads. We were SO excited once we caught sight of the lovely blue waters of the bay & smelled the salty breezes. We drove through Paihia on our way to the Resort. It was spread out among several buildings but the lobby was openly spacious & welcoming.

We definitely needed the map to find our "wing" named the Seaspray. Our room faced the water & the bridge between the hotel & town. There was a sitting area with 2 rattan chairs & a table ( which we used often). The sliding door opened to the lush green lawn & we fed some seagulls each morning. The room itself was spacious with comfy beds & a good shower.

In the main part of the hotel, there was a large restaurant & separate bar area. But the sitting area at the landscaped lawn was lovely, next to the pool. A lovely spot to end the day

We decided that this was the best of the 3 Copthornes and wished we could've stayed longer than 2 nights. We liked the town of Paihia & the numerous shops & eateries; there were frequent ferries and plenty of businesses offering tours at the pier. We also drove about a half-hour to Kerikeri and although it was busy, we only shopped at Makana the chocolatier.

Again, as with the other 2 Copthornes, we were limited to 20 minutes or 20 MB of free wifi per device, after which rates applied. There was a well-equipped laundromat ($2 per washer or dryer load, $1 detergent), and bikes to rent from the front desk.

Thanks for your review! We certainly have a lovely spot in Waitangi with waterviews from most rooms as well as having the historical Treaty Grounds close. I am glad you enjoyed to pool and spa for some relaxation. We hope you have the chance to visit again. Make sure you ask our receptionists for one of the many activities around the Bay!

Imagine checking in, being given your keys going to the room to find it has a glass side that faces the sun all day, all the windows are closed, no air conditioning and the temperature inside is 39 deg. C. It took all night will a wobbly, noisy fan and the windows open to get the room temperature to 26 deg.C in the hope of getting some sleep. The poor girl at reception looked a bit stressed when I asked if we could move to a cooler room because the place was fully booked by a conference that monopolised the reception area and caused misery at breakfast because the staff were under pressure to clear breakfast away ready for 600 delegates for lunch i.e. vacuum cleaners going, plates crashing, chairs dragged about. In the end we picked up our breakfast and carried it back to our room for some piece and quiet. There was no gesture to make amends, such as deducting the cost of the breakfast so we just put up, shut up and left after 3 days of the same. Sadly some of the staff were a bit rude which I can only put down to the pressures caused by the conference.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review. I apologise that some aspects of you stay did not meet your expectations. In regards of the air conditioning, all of our rooms have access to a porch or a balcony and receive a lot of natural daylight instead of air conditioning. Your feedback helps us reviewing our processes and implementing continuous improvements especially during our busy times. Your comments about the service by our staff will assist us in training. We have taken your review on board and are committed to strive to offer the best possible experience.
