“Average Hotel Great Location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2013

The location is simply amazing with views from just about every room.
The hotel itself is tired but the staff cheerful and accommodating. It is overpriced but what an amazing location.
The shuttle to Pahia stops early but the walk is wonderful and it is not far to walk.
Plenty of parking
Good choices for the breakfast and it was included in the price

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view on the ground floor and avoid the esturay view rooms

The Hotel is an old building, with several wings, max 2 stories high. The reception area was renovated a few years ago. The majority of the guests comes in groups by bus and stay not more than 2 days.
Rooms are available in several categories, we had booked one of the suites with a beautiful view of the Bay of Islands. The suite was well equipped with 2 Sofas, a dining table for four, desk, separate bedroom, small bathroom. Nice balcony, but many of the tiles are broken. There is a table and chairs but loungers would have been nice, too.

Very negativ: No air condition and the room gets very hot. Two mobile vans cannot really help. No mosquito protection at doors or window. They overdue it with the water saving, as the water flows very sparingly and lukewarm which is highly questionable in view of the hygiene.
The big restaurant offers buffets at all meals, but à la carte is also possible. The quality is okay. Drinks are expensive. The service is okay, nothing special.

We asked at reception for extra sheet and blanket and had to remind them twice. Cleaning of the room is quick but not thoroughly.

The pool area is very nice but unkempt, the cushions of the sun loungers are blotchy. No gym.

Thank you for taking the time to flace feedback.
We are trying to get approval for aircon, but this needs to go through our Head Office. We do not actualy impose water restrictions on our guests, so I thank you for this comment as there must be a problem with your shower, I have passed this on to our Maintenance team. I do apologise for the delay in you getting your extra sheets and will follow up with the desk as to what caused the delay and needing to be reminded.

We booked this through a Grab One deal and it was for a Garden View Room with full breakfast included. When booking, I asked that we and friends we were weekending with, could be close to each other if possible as it a was part of a birthday weekend trip. We were booked next to each other and to our great pleasure, we had been given sea view rooms, wonderful service!

The breakfast was great with plenty of variety and all in all we would be very happy to visit here again. Only sorry we didn't book for longer.

Thank you!

Very pretty location, and not cheap, but this felt like a pretty average hotel, even though the lake view is stunning. The hotel is situated a couple of kilometres outside the town, but the courtesy bus finishes at 5.30pm. Presumably this is to encourage guests to dine in the hotel, but the a la carte menu is unexciting and the special was a carvery. We had thought there would be lots of seafood, but when we asked, the receptionist was clearly amused by the idea! We decided to walk into town instead (where lots of seafood is available!). Parking is plentiful at hotel but there was nothing available near our rooms in the Hibiscus Wing, so we had to transport our bags a fair way. There did not seem to be any help on offer either, although happily we were not too overburdened. Rooms are comfortable, but not exceptional, and I think you could do better in Paihia. Tip: get a room at the far end of the corridor, where not too many people pass by, because the noise of people talking sounds very loud in the rooms.

Thank you for your comments. We do have a variety of seafood on our menu as well as the buffet, it really just depends on what you are after. Please let us know if you would like help with your bags, there will always be someone to assist, but our porter is not always standing at reception.

We stay here regularly because of the good online deals and because it's located in the heart of Paihia with its attractions, beautiful Waitangi grounds, and spectacular Zane Grey views. It's an older hotel so don't stay here if you want state of the art surfaces and fittings (nor, for the price, should you expect these). Often we have a night at the Copthorne on the spur of the minute, for $99 bucks, a little more if we want a water view room or inclusion of buffet breakfast. The latter consists of the usual hotel morning fare, but you can ask (usually) for your eggs to be cooked for you rather than have a spoonful of the watery scrambled eggs. The staff are cheerful and there is lots to do. We recommend the Waitangi horse riding up the road, especially during the summer months when the trek will take you through pretty bush and finish with a splash in the sea. Bikes are available for a ride through the parklands, and reception will book you on any of the many available area attractions. The pools are idyllic for young and old and are a destination in themselves for our young ones. I enjoy a quiet walk on the historic foreshore, looking for flotsam and beach glass.

Room Tip: Spring for a water view room; sometimes they don't cost any extra, or not much. The book in adva...

Just like previous review, we got this through Grab one deal and for the price we paid i would say it was a GREAT DEAL! Stunning sea view room with magnificent sunrise view to die for. We upgraded and got a sea view room. The room could do with some upgrade in the bathroom and fridge definitely needs to go. Friendly housekeeping staff who went out of their way before being asked to replenish our towels and tea stuff. Buffet breakfast was SUBLIME! Views are magnificent with the occasional rabbit on the front lawn...a delight for my children to see. The MAJOR downfall that i would point out in my view was the heat. One ceiling fan only which did no justice to cool the room. One standing upright fan which also did not help. Would be great if they could invest in installing air conditions in the rooms. Stayed two nights and apart from the downfalls which in my view is easily fixed...WONDERFUL place to stay. If you get the chance to grab a deal out of this hotel grab it..i did and we loved it!

Room Tip: We had room 323 in the sea spray wing and the sunrise view was amazing!

Interesting that the very first “glowing” review posted on this page was actually written as long ago as April 2010.
For us, Copthorne was more than adequate, though we had participated in a Grab One offer .. had we paid full tariff, the “value-for-money” aspect would have been suspect. As noted by others, the décor was tired, but in 1963, when constructed, was probably state of the art (upgraded in 2007)
Staff were friendly & obliging .. we were, however, a little amused when requesting a black pepper grinder at dinner one evening, to be informed that “it was borrowed by a guest who hasn’t yet returned it” … nor had “it” been returned the following evening. A solitary black pepper grinder in such a sizable establishment ??
But a charming location, good food (expensive?) and a glorious garden setting for a spacious dining area.

Yes, there were shortcomings, but we would be happy to revisit at a later date
