Me and my family had an awesome adventure with Mike and his yacht early january--the weather was wicked and the boat--a big 65ft Ocean Yacht was great.
Mike the skipper/owner was really great - very experienced and knowledgable of the pretty bay of Islands!.
We were greeted on the Yacht from Paihia wharf with a nice warm milo & biscuit and his friendly crew of 2.
It was a good 6 odd hours of sailing with the large sails up and we had BIG gusts of wind that sent shivers up my spine (esp as the boat went right over to 1 side and I was dearly hanging on-cause Im a chicken-lol).
We got lovely fresh oranges cut up from nearby keriKeri for morning tea.
Then onto a secluded white sandy bay beach for an hour or so--options for people to hike up a DOC hillside for amazing views--a quick kayak--swim or laze on the beach.
Lunch back on the boast was a huge tasty fresh ham/salad sandwich and cans of drink were passed around for everyone as well--(beer or coke).
The highlight for us as a family was Mike handed over the reins (well the "helm" actually) to my husband and he steered us back near into Russell for approx 30minutes or so).
He LOVED it and made extra special cause this trip was his birthday gift.
You could relax on board or actually get stuck in and help with the crew and the sails too even if you are a novice!.
Well worth it---cheers Mike!

“Excellent trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2012

We have made a sailing trip with the Gungha II. We were staying in Paihia and were picked up from the Wharf in Paihia. You can also be picked up from Russel. After a couple of cloudy days and a full day of rain, the weather on this day was perfect. It was very sunny and there was enough wind for good sailing. Mike is an experienced sailor and is willing to tell you anything about the boat or the sailing. Also Mike can tell you lots of stories about his adventures on his sailing trips in the Bay of Islands and also around Fiji. If you want you can help Mike with the sailing. Before lunch we stopped on one of the islands. There you could swim, snorkel or go kayaking. The snorkels and the kayaks were provided by Mike. After a refreshing swim we had a very nice lunch on the boat. In the afternoon we continued the sailing.

This was an excellent trip with a very nice host on a good boat on a perfect day on a beautiful location in NZ.

On our trip were 20 people. This is the amount good enough for this boat. On other trips we saw smaller boats with much more people on board.

“Fantastic one day trip in the Bay of Islands”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 25, 2011

This was such a great thing to do: Mike is an experienced sailor and he would be telling you about his different trips several times to the Fiji Islands or other places in the Pacific. We were lucky with the wind and the weather. And if you happen to have some experience in sailing you would be kindly asked to participate in the tasks on the boat. The group is small enough to be able to enjoy the 65 ft sailing boat. A stop on an island is planned and if you feel like you can also go kayaking and snorkelling, Mike would provide you with all the gear you need. We were lucky enough to see Dolphins on our way from and back to Paihia.
