Owner description: The Bay of Islands is New Zealand's foremost historic area, birthplace to Maori and Pakeha (European) relations and home of the Kerikeri Mission Station. Established in 1819, the Kerikeri Mission Station is one of New Zealand's first places where Maori invited visitors to to live among them. Built under the protection of local Maori chiefs who were keen to harness the trade and technology of Europe, Kerikeri Mission Station grew amidst a backdrop of tribal warfare and ever increasing visits from foreign ships. Located only 5 minutes from Kerikeri the Kerikeri Mission Station has a range of activites available. The grounds tour is a visitor favourite - experienced guides share stories of fierce warriors and drunken sailors and earnest missionaries who preached, taught and battled to spread the Christian message amongst Maori, a proud people with their own ancient traditions. The Kerikeri Mission Station is also the site of two of the country's oldest surviving buildings- The Stone Store and Kemp House.

Interesting building to visit, bottom floor is set as an old store and has things you can buy, would recommend to take the tour as its worth it to learn about the history of it and the surrounding area - you can also look at the old wooden mission house behind the store too, top story of the stone store was apparently haunted, didn't notice anything when I was up there though.

Oldest stone building in New Zealand. Interesting history and set in a nice garden shared with adjacent Mission House. We did not do the guided tour, but enjoyed nosying around the ground floor of the Stone Store and wandering in the gardens.

A guided tour gave access to the upper two Stone store floors as well as Kemp House. It proved invaluable in understanding and providing a context for both the buildings and missionary work. We could not recommend it more highly. Kemp house rather than the Stone Store is the real treasure to see. As an aside, Brits get free entry on production of a National Trust card. Well worth visiting

The area of the stone store [ NZ's first stone house], Kemp House,[ NZ's first european house ] St James' church and Rewas Pa makes an ideal tranquil day out. This is the first time I have seen a town remove a road and its bridge to bring any area back to a condition that enables you to get a feel for the early settlement. The Cafe is nice too

Superb easy walk. Take a camera. I recommend to visit the same day Rainbow Falls, a parrot place and a museum.
