We took the 20 minute drive from Masterton to Greytown on recommendations that it was worth it to go to Salute!

Coming from Auckland I was not sure what to expect but it was just perfect. A quiet Thursday night in Greytown but the restaurant was packed with people arriving all the time. We sat down to prompt service, a great glass of smooth Shiraz, gourmet pizza and their famous chorizo/cabbage slaw.

Great ambiance, very smart & sexy interior.

Definitely worth searching it out and nestling in for a good feast!

Salute is consistently good every time we visit (several years of visits) in terms of old, wine choices and service. The Mediterranean twist is there for all the dishes and echoes more the flavours of Turkey and North Africa (Morocco) rather than Italy or other similar and more commonly found Mediterranean cafes. This gives Salute the edge and puts it ahead of other cafes - but the quality of the ingredients, the skill in cooking and presentation really send it into the lead for my favorite places to eat. We travel an hour from Wellington just to eat there - over a hill with a windy road and steep bush clad faces above and below the road. It is worth the effort. The tapas selections are great, or you can just revel in the crispy Turksh flat bread chargrilled and drizzled with olive oil. My favorite is the fritters - tangy lemon sugar coated light as air puffs of deep fried delight, drizzled with just a touch of pomegranate molasses. They taste so good they have to be good for you! They put a real smile on my face. You can sit inside our outside under big trees (I think they were oaks), and in autumn children delight in throwing the piled up crunchy leaves at their parents - nearby there are lots of boutique shops. It is a lovely village atmosphere in Greytown.

This restaurant has been a Greytown stalwart for over 10 years, with chef Travis Clive-Griffin at the helm.
They have fabulous coffee, well-trained staff, comfortable surroundings, a great local wine list, great food...What more can I say?
There are outdoor tables under the oaks for summer, a deck to catch the late afternoon sun, and cosy seating areas for inside.
They were in the Cuisine Top 10 Restaurants in NZ; then down-shifted to provide more tapas-style food.
Regardless of what they do, this place is a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike.

The food is not changing a lot. After visiting a couple of times you know the tricks of the trade. The chef is very good
