My wife and I stayed two nights to visit the Wairarapa. We chose this hotel for its location, excellent web site and the price of the double room. Only $80 NZ. This hotel has been refurbished downstairs where there is a bar, a restaurant, and a function centre, all sparkling new. The manager Cindy and staff in the bar were super friendly, as were the locals, especially Phil the Pom, and the restaurant where we ate both nights, the meals from Ian the chef, were superb.
Our double room, upstairs opened up onto the verandah, and we spent an hour or so watching the world go by. Ask for room 2 or 3 if wanting to stay.
The upstairs have not yet been refurbished, and this is clearly needed. None of the 4 or 5 rooms had en suites, but this was to be expected. The bed was comfortable, the tv had sky so I could watch the ashes cricket.
The two downsides were the state of cleanliness of the bathroom, and we discussed this with the manager, and this problem will have now been sorted, and the creaky floorboards to go to the toilet, that will not be solved.
All in all a very enjoyable stay with friendly people, and would stay again if we visited again.
Greytown has turned itself into a switched on town with a main street that is up with the best in any country town in NZ.
