“Don't eat here, spoilt by a simple lack of apology.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2012

It started out well, friendly inviting staff and owner, beautiful day, nice wine. We wouldn't even have minded the hour long wait for lunch (there was only 2 tables of people ahead of us) except when the food came out, the whitebait looked OK, but 1 pattie was completely charcoal burnt on the bottom side, the other was overcooked and dry but slightly edible. Unfortunately I had eaten the slightly edible one first. They sat on a lump of very dry sourdough bread ends and a salad made pretty much of red onion, (main cost is $38). Tried to get the attention of the staff with no success, finally when they came to clean up, pointed out the burnt offerings and all I got was "naughty chef, I have to have a word, I'll come and tell you the dessert menu" and then proceeded to wander off for 10 mins. Got up to go pay, heard them talking in the back room. "well I guess we just charge her for 1 pattie at the entree price of $20." Came out from the back, saw us, turned on her heel and ran out the back room again. Other staff member came out and charged us the bill, no apology or explaination, just banter about the weather and shopping, could see they had written down the price of an entree, so in true uncomplaining Kiwi fashion paid the bill and left.
A simple, 'I am so sorry" would have made us leave feeling soo much better, now will advise all heading to martinborough to avoid this place unless you want to feel ripped off.

“In need of modernisation”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2011

Seems like this place needs finishing, staff were pretty friendly, did take awhile for the meals to arrive-not sure if we would go there again if in Martinborough. Nice location however.

“Disappointing.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2010

we were looking forward to a day in the beautiful wine region and lunch at Alana. We enquirer if they had any gluten free dishes and my wife had a frosty "no!" but we had vouchers and thought we would try the estate anyway. There were 9 items on the menu, 3 starters, mains and deserts so keeping it simple is taken to a new level. The dining areas are disappointing as you have no view at all, you cannot even see a vine and by the way it's not important to book in advance. The food? Just ok!
