As we sat down by a roaring fire on a cool Sunday morning, the background music was K.D Lang singing Halleluja. I was won over from the start. The wonderfully welcoming Poppy Hammond soon had us tasting the wines she makes with husband Shayne. We particularly enjoyed the pinot gris from this new winery.
The Hammonds have a simple philosophy said Poppy: "We make wines we enjoy and put on the table the food we like to eat." We had two platters which featured a range of mostly local seasonal food including pork belly, tapanades and salmon. It was a delicious brunch and value for money. Only Poppies wines are served.
It is not a restaurant so much as a tasting room where good food is served.
Poppies is currently open Friday to Tuesday but is also available as a wedding and special occasions venue for up to 120. You look out from the minimalist dining room to rows of vines planted outside.
We have been there for both Mother's Day and Father's Day this year and have agreed it will become a family tradition.
