Oak House

My wife and I stayed with Chris and Polly at the Oak House B&B many years ago. . . and the fond memories of this special visit stay with us. The area of Martinville (boutique vineyards) is amazing and is the reason Chris and Polly live there as they are both very involved with wine. They know about wine and are most willing to share! We stayed two nights and enjoyed the comfort of their B&B as well as as the fabulous breakfasts. And, at that time we were able to share a dinner with them which was exquisitvely prepared by Polly. This is a Most Special Place hosted by two memorable people. It has only a few rooms and advanced reservations are advisable.

A 1923 Built house with old world charm.Though modern facilities, en-suite with piping hot and powerful shower. Most un-usual arrangement of rooms, at least from our bedroom.Had problems finding the dining room and lounge. ( and that was before the wine.) Polly and Frank are a lovely couple and make you very welcome. Frank has been in the wine trade all his life, and still brew's for other wineries. We had dinner with them the 1st night very nice indeed.Lucky to get to drink a bottle of Frank's own vintage ( not many left ) It was really really different '' Pinot Noir '' Lovely Yubbly.
After Easter in Martinborough it goes to sleep not many restaurants open after 7-00pm.
Polly recommended The Cinema'' with lovely fire burning. Went 2 nights.

We stayed in Martinborough for only one evening and found the Oak House very pleasant.
The large bedroom contained a very big and comfy bed.
The house itself is a stunning old building with original wood interiors and breakfast was served in a spacious dining room.
It is a short walk to the centre of Martinborough and surrounding wineries.
Our hosts were kind and welcoming and we wished we could have stayed longer.

What a great find this homestay B&B is. It is listed on the bnb.co.nz website, which I've used before with good luck. Since there are only a few rooms, bookings are advised. Very conveniently located for a winetasting excursion to Martinborough. I took the train/bus combination from Wellington (there is a bus stop right outside). Martinborough is dead flat and you can easily walk or bike between wineries (which helps pace tastings). If you are really a wine enthusiast you'll have an opportunity to learn a lot from the owners, the Burings, who have some 40 years in the wine business, and will welcome you with samples of some of their own excellent vintages (Burings of Martinborough). Breakfasts are a highlight, fresh local fruits, homemade preserves and lemon curd, croissants, and tastings of NZ honeys..displayed in vintage majolica and served in a beautiful dining room. The house is a 1920s villa made of heartwood rimu. Three friendly cats live here...although they are kept out of the bedrooms. Really lovely hosts and you'll leave feeling as if you've made new friends. Dinner can be provided ...and is worth it.! Pricing was very very reasonable.
