Reviewed September 30, 2013

My colleague and myself stayed in one of these cottages last Saturday night, both of us are terribly hard markers. This is one of the rare 10/10 marks I give. It was perfect, very private, excellent clean tasteful rooms and deck, complete with fireplace. The service was warm, polite and private. I have stayed in many places all over the world, if you want a great place to meet Australian people, trees and wildlife while you search for some peace, take one of these cottages and stay for a few days. northern light candle co.

We booked our stay at the cottages on a whim just 10 minutes before we arrived. We couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. On our approach at dusk, we saw a kangaroo bouncing across the land which got the kids (and us) hugely excited, then we turned the corner and we were greeted by 100's of wild kangaroos (including one white one) and some huge deer.

We were greeted by Ross (a warm, friendly and very helpful man) who gave us information and recommendations around the area, and shown to our Lodge where a basket of fresh food and a bottle of decent wine was awaiting us. The lodges are so private, picturesque and well appointed with lots of glass to look out over the stunning landscape and river.

we went for a walk along the river to try and see the resident platypus but unfortunately didn't see it this time. There are lots of free DVDs to choose from at reception for both children and adults, and being in a cottage as oppose to a hotel meant that we didn't have to share our bedroom with our children.

The location is easy to access all the cellar doors of Yarra Valley. We are definitely returning. I recommend Heaseville Sanctuary with young kids, especially if you have an annual zoo pass for the Taronga (Syndey) or Melbourne zoos, as to our surprise they accepted it.

My one regret was not bringing my decent camera with me! Thank you Ross and the team

Hi Amelia M,

Thank you for posting your review. It is really pleasing that you found us to be family friendly and that you and your family were able to enjoy some of our beautiful walks throughout our 120 acre nature reserve. Unfortunately we can't always guarantee you will see the platypus in the Yarra river, however we can guarantee seeing one of the 200 kangaroos on the Windsor Park property.

I hope we will see you and your family back again soon.

Had a fantastic stay at the Yering Gorge Cottages.
Staff were helpful, scenery is beautiful and close to the Yarra Valley wineries.
Saw kangaroos and the fireplace kept us warm throughout the night.
Perfect for a weekend getaway and romantic weekend away.

Room Tip: Sugarloaf has a good view

A wonderful peaceful getaway not far from the hustle of the city and close to all the great sites of the Yarra Valley. Beautifully clean and modern cottages with a superb outlook over the Yarra River with all the great flora and fauna that this great country has to offer. Sit back and do nothing in your spa or on your front patio or take on some of the great walks through some of the many walking tracks along the river or through the bush. You will not be disappointed with the service that Sharon offers on your arrival, her pleasant and welcoming manner followed by her knowledge of the local area were of great assistance and with your welcome chocolates and wine followed by fresh bread and paper delivered each day to go with the breakfast hamper provided a great start to enjoy this beautiful location. Don't miss this place you'll love it, don't forget your camera.

Room Tip: They're all good

I am so glad I found this place. I planned on using it as a base to visit local wineries and shops, but once I settled in, I didn't really want to go anywhere else. The cottages are clean and spacious, complete with full kitchen, spa tub, living & dining area, and separate bedroom with a perfect bed. I was very well looked after in a discreet way. It was so relaxing so be surrounded by the rhythms of the local wildlife. IF you are a QUIET, reflective person who respects wildlife, (and has a tolerance for a bit of boisterous bird vocalization), you will love this place. I certainly did.

Hi Josanpu,

Thank you very much for your review on Yering Gorge. I am so pleased that we were able to provide the type of relaxing stay that you were looking for and that you really did enjoy our magnificent wildlife.

The birds can most certainly be boisterous but at least the Kangaroos are nice and quiet.

We look forward to seeing you back soon.

Beautifully decked out cottage, well away from other cottages... far enough that you don't know they are there. Wake up to Kangaroos in the garden. Ride the bikes along the Yarra with a picnic. Or just sit on the porch watching the world go by. This is well away from the road so all you hear are the birds calling or the wind in the trees. Very well looked after by the managers and they are happy to help with most things.

We stayed at the gorgeous Yering Gorge Cottages, set in a beautiful location, off the beaten track! Located in the middle of the valley you have kangaroos and other wildlife at your doorstep, in your front yard - we had 20 kangaroos and got quite close to them (without touching them of course). The friendly team personally took us to our cottage explaining things to do and see. Set amongst high trees and other cottages close by - it was truly our own sanctuary! The cottages are huge and have a gorgeous fireplace, heated bathroom floors and comes with a breakfast hamper - LOVE!!! They will soon have a golf course on site which is exciting. I don't think we could have been more relaxed. We will definitely be back! Thank you Ross and team, Kate.
