Yering Gorge Cottages

We booked a 2 bedroom cottage at Yering Gorge for 3 nights with a party of 5 and very much enjoyed our experience. Yering Gorge Cottages is set in peaceful, beautiful and natural surroundings that really took us away from the bustle of Melbourne.

The Cottage itself is spacious and well-equipped although not necessarily with state-of-the-art branded sound systems or kitchen equipment like in other "luxury accomodations" perhaps. We enjoyed a bbq each evening on our patio, and lit the fireplace with the wood provided each morning, central heating was sufficient for colder mornings as well. Our children had a wonderful time each day kangaroo-spotting, feeding the horses, bird watching and simply throwing a frisbee on the lawn in front of our cottage. The beds were comfortable, the breakfast basket generous, and fresh bread was delivered to our doorstep each morning with the newspaper. The owner/ manager Ross was most friendly and helpful, and we would wave at him in the mornings as he delivered the bread and papers to each cottage. There was a lot of privacy as well, despite the cottages being spaced within sight of one another....the neighbors were quiet and we seldom crossed paths. On the practical side, there was a supermarket within 15 minutes, easy access to the vineyards and their restaurants, and a very useful (and free) laundry room. The sunrise was superb from our cottage, and we could see hot air balloons rising in the distance some mornings. A photographer's delight.

One improvement we would perhaps like would be to have heating in the bathrooms!

Room Tip: The 2 bedroom cottages are further up from the river but we had stunning views of the hills and sunr...

As soon as I arrived I noticed the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings. I was greeted by a friendly and efficient check in process and was promptly shown around the cottage and facilities. From then onwards I was left to enjoy my stay in complete solitude and peace. If you are looking for a couple of days away just to relax, enjoy beautiful scenery and numerous walks around the property then this is the place for you. The cottage was very comfortable and well equipped with all modern facilities. The views from all windows and the outside decking were stunning and it was lovely being able to sit on the deck with a glass of wine and watch the kangaroos gathering closeby. I highly recommend this as a place to stay to get away from it all!

We booked three nights. It was a strange booking, we wanted somewhere to spend the day before a 50th in the region and then somewhere to return to overnight.
We arrived early (i had checked in the afternoon before, Ross was very helpful) and we didn't see anyone for the whole day, just what we were hoping for.
The setting was perfect. The room a joy. We didn't end up even spending the night as we stayed very late at the dinner. Poor Ross must have wondered what happened to us.

Anyway we have resolved to come back. Just loved it.

we spent 2 nights at the Yering Gorge cottages for our wedding anniversary, and would highly recommend them. The owner Ross was very friendly and helpful on our arrival, showing us to our cottage and explaining how everything worked, and also giving us several suggestions for places to eat and wineries to visit :-) the cottages were really beautiful, all with a stunning outlook through the floor to ceiling windows onto the Yarra river and surrounding bushland - perfect for watching the 'roos in the morning and at dusk! Each cottage is fully self contained and well equipped, and has a lovely log fire which is perfect for the chilly Yarra Valley evenings! some of the furniture in our cottage showed signs of wear and tear but everything worked ok, apart from the WiFi which we really struggled to connect to.
my only suggestion would be that it would be good to have bathrobes provided, for enjoying brekkie on the balcony in the mornings - otherwise everything was fantastic :-)

Beautiful Country Escape!

Only a 45-minute drive out of the city to reach this utopia. We had a valley room view, which had a spectacular view of the river, mountains and kangaroos jumping around our cottage. Ideal for those wanting the true Australian experience, an escape from reality or a romantic retreat.

Highlights were;

•Fantastic customer service – it’s the little things that count and personal service I was impressed with. Fresh bread and a paper brought to your door daily.

•The huge windows give you a spectacular view! When it’s a little warmer the deck at the front of the cottage would be great to sit and have a wine while admiring the wildlife.

•Really clean and comfortable. Ipod dock, bbq, efficient heating, well stocked mini bar and big comfortable beds made it all the more comfortable.

•Huge bathrooms with big jetted spa baths – perfect for a romantic get away.

•Fantastic location if you are going to do a winery tour. We toured with Wombat Winery tours and they were able to pick up and drop us of ride outside our cabin, really convenient.

A really magical stay I would really recommend even for a one night stint you wake up feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Room Tip: The valley view room right next to reception had a spectacular view and lots of wildlife at your foo...

This is our second visit to Yering Gorge Cottages and we love it. It is a little piece of paradise less than an hours drive from Melbourne. The cottages are set on a grassy bush clearing with views down to the Yarra at the bottom of the property. Kangaroos come out to graze around the cottages morning and night with plenty of other wildlife to watch as well.
The cottages are well stocked with breakfast provisions- a basket of fruit, cereals and jams plus milk, juice and ground coffee. A newspaper and fresh loaf of bread are delivered each morning. There is also a complimentary bottle of local wine and some little chocolate bars in each cottage.

Kids paradise- this is a great place for kids to explore ( supervise though as the river is high and swift here). Our boys (3&7) found a huge mulch pile to play on, bush to explore, bones to uncover( kangaroo skeleton), sticks to dig with and river to follow. They especially loved the fire in the cottage and helping restock the wood pile/ light the fire.

The cottages are well appointed but not too fussy for kids either and they are well spread to offer plenty of privacy.

This is a great base to explore the Yarra Valley from or just stay at the cottages and relax. A hidden gem.

I had booked and paid for a one bedroom cottage (the last one) for one night directly with Sharon at Yering Gorge Cottages, two days before my stay as a surprise weekend for my fiance. Usually it is a 2 night min. on a weekend but she was happy to waive this. There were also 2 x 2 bedrooms available. We had driven up early that day from Melbourne to enjoy a day spa at the fantastic Piaf Day Spa (see separate review) and when we finished I found a voicemail that our accomodation had been cancelled due to a double booking. I rang Sharon who never apologised except to say "we regret" the situation and offered to assist us find other accommodation. I asked for the 2 bedroom instead but it was now booked. On her theory of double bookings, we should have been offered this and the other customer been told the bad news. No form of compensation was offered except for refunding my money. With less than 2 hours to check in somewhere, I declined her offer as how could I trust someone to find me something when they cant even organise there own business. I suspect that they decided to give the room to someone after my booking, who wanted to stay more than one night as the next two nights were now fully booked on that cottage.

Thank goodness for the lovely ladies at the Yarra Valley Visitor Information Centre (recommended by the Piaf Day Spa owner), who found us accommodation at Gatehouse Villa Raedward, which was absolutely fantastic if you are looking to chill out and relax in your accommodation with everything provided and more.
