“A lazy Sunday breakfast”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

The relaxed atmosphere and the choice of both a buffet and a cooked breakfast ensured we did not go hungry. The produce was of a high quality and the staff friendly and attentive.

“Not really a cafe”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

To call Sweetwater a cafe is a bit misleading. It is actually a very expensive and very good restaurant.

Sweetwater is located in a conservatory created from the space between two buildings at Chateau Yering - the house itself and what was once, presumably, a barn. The cafe has stone floors and a rather comfortable version of cane furniture. There are views out to the gardens. It's a pleasant space but temperature can fluctuate a bit - so bring some warm clothing.

The food is excellent. It is a bit 1980s retro with a lot going on in each dish - many ingredients and garnishes with small portions. However, the many flavours do integrate well. I had the smoked beetroot salad and a wagyu burger that was melt-in-the-mouth tender. We also had a couple of vegetable side dishes which were necessary to add volume to the meal. The menu recommends wines to go with each dish. We followed the recommendations and were not let down. Most of the food and wine is sourced locally including some interesting and unusual wine choices. The pudding was well worth waiting for too.

The overall experience is wonderful. You are not hurried; you are given time and space. Right from the moment you walk through the door, you are shown to a sitting room to wait for a table to be prepared. The waiting staff are helpful and friendly without being domineering or patronising. It's a good atmosphere.

I did mention that it was expensive. My wife and I had starters, mains, puddings, two side dishes and two glasses of wine each. The bill at the end was $215. We thought it was well worth it for the great time and great food we had and it was what we had expected. But if you had called in expecting to get a quick, cheap lunch in a cafe you would not be impressed.

“High Class, yet casual experience”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

We had lunch here in between wine tastings in the Yarra Valley. Menu has something for all, (not kids though), We had a selection of dishes, Squid ink linguini, steamed asparagus, tomato rissoto, seared scallops, angus rump. All meals were excellent. They served all entrees together, all mains together, timing was perfect. $44/head 2 courses and 1 wine included. Highy recommended.
