Yep, they're allowed on this gorgeous old goldfields train for the round trip from Walhalla to Thomson and back. How stunning the scenery was, crossing old bridges and magnificent rivers complete with mini waterfalls and gravity defying bridges. This truly stunning volunteer run little railway runs only a few times a week, especially on weekends, and the conductors are friendly and a true delight. My daughter stood out the back of the train and the conductor pointed out various sites to her, here an old mine, there a major stream or rock pool. The price was around $30 for the both of us for a round 1 hr trip with a 20 min stop at the little station of Thomson. Memorabilia and photos abound. We even sponsored a railway sleeper as many were lost in the bushfires, and we will get a certificate in due course. Just lovely. If you are in Walhalla it's a must. And remember, you can take the dogs (free)!

Good fun, interesting history. The volunteers told stories and the ladies supplied free hot chocolate with marsh-mellow and muffins.

The scenery was magnificent. The train line runs along the mountain edge with the creek by its side.Too bad it only takes 20 min one way..

“A ride back to the past”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 11, 2012

This was a most pleasant trip, through beautiful scenery. We saw some wildlife from the train, which for quite a while runs alongside a beautiful creek/river. Staff were friendly and helpful and the railway stations have been done up beautifully. This adds to the already significant attraction of the stunningly lovely historical town Walhalla.

“What a cute train”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2012

A pleasant walk from our accomodation in town took us to the train station. A pleasant chat with two of the knowledgable volunteers when we bought our tickets, And a very pieasant ride on this small train was another high point of our stay in Walhalla. The volunteers can tell you anything you want to know, and point out things on the way that you should not miss. There is plenty of time to have an icecream and walk to the river, when you have reached the end of the line before heading back to town.
